The title would be "9planets" (aka: 9 planets in 9 minutes - excluding intro & outro)

Yeah, it is a problem because the range of sounds are so amazing. I decided to make my track by realising the various sections as midi clips first (using a very basic GM type sound in the right ballpark for the sound I wanted for each clip). So, then I had the structure of the piece. The next VERY BIG job was to hunt down some patches which were close to what I had in my head, drop some in, mod them etc ... very much then an evolution of the soundstage to the final piece as I iterated the process to get just the tonal mix I could "hear". Then it was Eq-ing, mixing, verb-ing where necessary (very few instances in my case) a little comp in places and final EQ and some magic with Limiter No 6.photonic wrote:Arrgggh ... I just know if I did it all from scratch, I would be here until Christmas and beyond just getting the sounds I wanted.
Just a different approach this time for me.
Good luck all,

Why when loading the song to soundcloud appear an error message if you put your name into the title? (ballacr75 - high voltage)

if i recall right, it's a message to inform you that putting your artist name into the song title is not neccessary / redundant, since soundcloud adds it automatically.
but of course soundcloud doesn't know anything about the special requirements of OSC.

Yeah, I get that error even with 32 Lives installed to convert it. Best I've been able to do is ignore the warning and try to launch it, but there's no GUI, just the raw parameter list... and changing those don't do anything to the timbre. The VST is 32-bit so I can't load it via a wrapper like BlueCat's Patchwork. Synth 1 just really really hates Logic.EDGEK8D wrote:Has anyone gotten this to work in Logic 9 or X? I can't. I was excited to see that there was now an AU version, but only 32-bit, so I tried to load it u in Logic 9 instead of X, bummer, but no biggie.
No go in Garageband either. Makes you wonder why he bothered to make an AU out of it...

Work in progress.
https://soundcloud.com/andy-mcnish/synth1
Limited myself to just the 'Bladerunner' soundbank - ended up using just 5 patches from it.
Song is more or less done but not mixed yet.
Any thoughts?
EDIT - Thanks for feedback Dr Bob. You were dead right about the bass on the end - I had extended the middle 8 bassline out across the arps at the end by mistake so that is why it sounded off. Also I added some Detroit Stacks underneath the kick for a little extra oopmh!
So it uses 6 patches from the Bladerunner Soundbank now.
Other than the Sonar pro-channel EQ and some stereo imaging for width on the chords and arps (and some very basic static panning) I haven't mixed it at all to be honest. My mixing skills are pretty poor and I always seem to make a song muddier the more I try to do...

Hi Folks,
I'm new here and would like to participate in this OSC and have got a few questions about the rules.
First a quick info about my person: I'm 35 years, been making music almost all of my life, but most of the time singer-/songwriter and rock music stuff. A couple of years ago I started being active in the demoscene - at least in the retro / C64 part of it - as coder and SID musician. Last year I wanted to try out making electronic music on modern PC too and got me a copy of Renoise. As I didn't make much progress without having a "goal" I looked around the web for online competitions and found OSC in july, but didn't find the time to compete. Until now...
Don't expect much. I don't know much about modern electronic music. Never listened to it. Only oldschool chiptunes, so I guess that my stuff will be more 80's style
Finally here are my questions:
1.) I don't really get the meaning of this sentence: "Sampling for example a bass drum in order to get a consistent sound is not allowed either." So is it allowed to sample drum sounds or not? It's not that important, but I really like playing drums with the pads of my Axiom25. But this is impossible when I have to switch between instances of the synth1 VSTi. I don't hear any difference between the sampled or the original VSTi drum sounds.
2.) Is it allowed to use an LFO device on a VSTi parameter? I.e. synth 1 comes with a filter and I want to have a subtle filter LFO on one instrument. It would be possible to create a similar effect just with the mod-wheel (just a little less acurate than automated), so I hope it is okay.
3.) I saw that using reverb is okay, but I don't know what "but the modulation usage must be minimal" means. Can someone explain this to me?
Thanks in advance! Now I've got to find out if it's possible to create some short C64-style ARPs with synth1...
Cheers,
spider.

hello and welcome spider-j!
being active in OSC since round 66, i'm still pretty new myself, but i think it's meanwhile safe to say that i understood the rules in every respect.
1.) the rules say that sampling or the general usage of samples is not allowed.
the line you quoted goes even further and states that even sampling a self-designed drum with the respective synth valid for the current round, is not allowed as well.
it's just an example why artists might feel the urge to sample a kick (in order to obtain a consistently sounding kickdrum, because the synth in charge might have a free running oscillator which causes the kick to sound different by every trigger)
or in other words: what ever problem you might encounter during the production stage - you may not "render to sample", in order to solve it ! (just to throw in some renoise jargon
)
the only exception is: bouncing synth sequences or whole tracks to sample in order to free up CPU resources.
(and then you may ofc not use any sample mangling or manipulation techniques on that bounced material)
2.) YES that is allowed. you can use all of renoise's meta- or automation devices.
in your example however, you might as well use synth1's internal LFO routed to the filter cutoff in order to get the described job done.
3.) this refers to the case that the freeware reverb of your choice offers the ability to put a chorus or a phaser on it's reverbed (wet) output. in this particular case, you may not use this so called "secondary effect" to an extent that it becomes too prominent compared to the non-modulated wet signal.
example: http://www.delamar.de/wp-content/upload ... Reverb.gif
(the knob in the lower right corner is what the rule is talking about..)

Hi,
thank you for the quick reply
Okay, then - as long as my CPU has enough power - I won't bounce anything at all.
As far as I can see there's no modulation on mpReverb, so that will be "safe" to use?

I don't use any external FX. In fact I'm primarily a Linux user and installed a Windows 7 with Renoise just for the sake of being able to use VSTi a few months ago.3.) this refers to the case that the freeware reverb of your choice offers the ability to put a chorus or a phaser on it's reverbed (wet) output. in this particular case, you may not use this so called "secondary effect" to an extent that it becomes too prominent compared to the non-modulated wet signal.
