It is most def a grower, now that I have had a chance to let the album spin for some time, I gotta say I'm satisifed. Most def it will be in my top 10 list for 2014.

It reminds me a lot of Plaid, and them being one of my favourites, it's gots to be a good thing

I liked it straight away. I can dance to it. Does everyone need a flat, predictable 4TT4 beat with signposted drops and breakdowns to dance to stuff?

Slightly bored with it now, but that might be because my attention span is...look a butterfly!

Wasn't very impressed tbh; wasn't appalled either though. Somehow I feel like I'd rather he released something that caused more of a response in me either way. Sounding a lot like those The Tuss tunes. I like the wiggly portamento funk synths.

Made me want to spin the RDJ album a bunch

I'll give it another go in the phuture.

I don't

AFX was never really about the 4X4 kick drum. Maybe at the very start, but otherwise he has done beatless (SAWII), trip-hop/drillnbass (ICBYD), drillnbass/indie (RDJA), drillnbass/idm (CTD), druqks (Druqks)

Some of the Analord stuff might be a bit 4tt4-ish, and some of his DJ sets have certainly had some of that in the mix....

But yeah, he's never really been a straight dance beats maker...I've always been able to dance to non-4TTF kinda stuff - I mean I don't have a problem with it, I love some out&out dumb techno at the right time, I just find it easier to dance to skittery, unpredictable beats than to regular predictable ones.

I can't be the only one - every time I've seen AFX live there's been crazy dancing going on in the crowd. Haven't seen him live for quite a few years now though.

My favourite of his is still SAWII though. It's simple but effective. That and FSOL's Lifeforms were my introduction to liking modern electronic stuff when I borrowed the tapes from my local library (previously into heavy metal, prog rock, and early electronic/instrumental stuff) so they will always have a special place in my heart.

I find syncopation easier to dance to as well. There's always this interplay between complexity and forwards momentum, and when that's perfectly balanced and I relax my body, it's like I turn into a bag of jumping beans

I tried dancing on mushrooms at a festival where I saw him, Squarepusher and Venetian Snares back to back (possibly just DJ sets) and I felt as though I danced like I was psychically linked to the flow of the tracks, in perfect time - like it was choreographed or something.

Afterwards, my friend showed me some video of it...

Lesson learned!

Saw Plaid live a couple of years ago. They sounded much better than Syro

Don't let silly things like surface appearances get in the way of a peak experience

See, music venues used to be about the actual music, and particularly stuff like Squarepusher has it's roots in raving, where nobody really cared what they or their friends looked like. These days, everyone is just filming eachother on their Iphones and worrying about a hair being out of place or delighing in the less fortunate's lack of photogenicity.

To be fair my mate was only filming me because I looked like a complete prat and thought I'd find it amusing in the cool light of the next day. This was some years ago (maybe before smartphones, if not at the beginning when few could afford them), before everyone's eyeballs were quite so permanently glued to their devices. It's not the first time I've been seen dancing like a marionette tangled in a loom and I doubt it'll be the last!
