Yes it sucks - I was waiting to see if it was worth upgrading but not now. Also no quad i7 iMacs except the 5K one. Looks like they want people to go for MacPro if you want quad and above.

Oh well. Nothing new here.

The bang for buck ratio seems to be steadily decreasing, almost on a par with the sliding share prices and decline in innovation at Apple. I have been a VERY loyal Apple fan boy since 2006 but I am finding it harder and harder to justify the cash outlay for the hype.

Quad i7 can be selected as BTO on any iMac.

5K iMac seems a good machine but not until broadwell CPUs are out and graphic card TDP is lowered, that is, better wait for 2nd generation next year.

Also, AMD Radeon R9 M290X seems a bit underpowered for 5K and M295X has very high TDP which is not good for an all-in-one.

It's very clear they want to sell iMacs and MacBooks instead.

Not as far as I can see - only on the 5K and 27-inch: 3.4GHz ones.

Naw, one of the 21.5's can too.

Ah yes I missed that - that might be a better option then - do the iMacs use desktop or mobile i7 chips?

I have checked now and i7 is only available for the higher priced models only (21 and 27).

Mobile else won't be so thin.

reckon it could go either way - the outgoing 'thin' 27" still used the i7-4771 (desktop part) so obviously they could handle the tdp somehow

The 21.5" 1.4 released earlier this year admittedly did use a U (ultrabook) cpu, but like the new macini 1.4 I think that's as much about cost as it is about thermal management

Having a 5K display and lumbering it with an under-powered cpu wouldn't make much sense (not that that's ever stopped Apple)

Post

looking at the i7 5k imac spec it says 4.0ghz with turbo boost to 4.4ghz - that exactly matches the i7-4790K (and nothing else)

I think it's better to wait until Broadwell CPUs are out next year.

I love this quote from the Apple store: "Enjoy incredible performance from the fourth-generation Dual-core Intel Core i5 or i7 processor". Yeah, I'm already enjoying that incredible performance with my Q6600 from 2007.

Maybe when the Broadwells are released Haswell prices are lowered and Apple decides to offer quadcores as an option.

Broadwell CPUs will be only a bit more powerful, their main advantage is that they consume three times less and thus their working temperature is so low that they don't need fans.

Which is perfect for the 5K iMac since graphic cards like M295X still have very high TDP. I don't think anybody would like screen condensation issues.
