I'm just thinking about ways to integrate my iPad with my main studio setup and could use a bit of help. I currently use the iPad as a wireless controller but I'd also like to get audio from it into my DAW. I have an apogee one (new version) which I sometimes use to record vocals into the ipad. If I connect the ipad to the One, I guess I could then connect the main output of the One (which is supposed to connect to speakers) into an input on my desktop audio interface? Would this work? Is it a sensible way of getting the iPad's audio into my DAW?

I can't see any reason why this would not work but I haven't actually tried it yet.

I'd appreciate any advice on this setup. Thanks.

I have an iConnect Midi interface and use my MV-8800 to sequence some of the synths. Synths like Sunrizer and Arctic Keys or NLog Pro are fairly lightweight on processor so I can run two synths on different midi channels. Since my MV-8800 is a great sampler, I always have the option to plug the output of my iPad into my sampler inputs while letting it sequence and sample the audio to build track layers with many different iOS synths. Currently I like to pick one or two good ones though and use it alongside my Venom and Blofeld synths with some good samples. I have a used JV1010 on the way too that I picked up for next to nothing and got an Orchestral expansion to go in it to also sequence. The MV-8800 has one midi in and two outs. I have Venom keyboard going to in on my MV and out from B side back to Venom, then A side is going to a one in, four out midi thru box to control everything else. This can be done just as easily with PC/Mac running DAW instead of a sampling sequencer. Same idea. I like it for a sound module more than a controller, but that's just my preference.

I have about 30 iOS synths and they sound great when put in a mix with the right samples and Venom/Blofeld combo.

Apollo Remote Recorder will stream your ipad audio wirelessly but needs Audiobus. I'm testing the vst plugin and it's buggy but once that's addressed it will be great, you can sequence ipad instruments from your host and record the audio in your ipad.

That sounds interesting.. It will definitely be cool to use my iPad sounds within my DAW projects. Anyway, I still haven't got around to trying the method above, but will try and give it a shot over the weekend.

I'm using the Iconnectmidi4+ with cubase, ipad! MPC, and novation SLmk2 and it is a joy! The ICM4+ lets you have direct communication (wired) between a PC or Mac, IOS devices, and pretty much anything that can do midi. I recommend the wired connection if your looking to have low latency with the ipad. In addition you can run the audio from the ipad into your DAW. On PC this can be achieved by using ASIO4all and creating an aggregate device or if you are lucky enough to use an RME soundcard you can route the audio to the DAW without needing the ASIO4all driver which is even better.

You gotta try the lemur ipad app - it is awsome. Let's you step sequence your vst's and hardware synths and gives you endless options to control your SW/HW. You can design your own custom midi controller with as many faders, buttons, switches, sequencers as your memory or processor can handle.

The DAW, ipad and MPC sequencers are all in sync too which is a real bonus for live performance and jamming sessions, much fun to be had. I really recommend the iconnectmidi units coupled with lemur. :tu:

Treebeard, which one of the daw, ipad and mpc is sending out the midi sync signal first? Are you running any sequencer on the ipad?

Crackbaby (Sprekkebaby), the MPC is sending MTC to the DAW (Cubase) and Midiclock to the iPad2. The iPad is running 7 custom stepsequencers together all from the Lemur app triggering various drummachine, synth and sampler vst's in Cubase. When I hit play on the MPC it starts both Cubase and the iPad.

About this: I also got the 4+ a while ago. It's pretty remarkable but I was turned off by having to use ASIO4all on PC and that it can't do 24/96 audio transfer. I was actually thinking of selling it, but I'm curious about the RME compatibility you brought up because I use a Digiface/PCIe setup from my DAW: what SR and bit-depth do you get from that and can you interface directly to the RME audio I/O with the iConnect app? TIA.

Not directly as such, but the iCM4+ shows up in the windows audio devices menu, from there I can send the audio to a stereo channel in the TotalMix mixer, create a submix and re-route back it to the DAW. The only thing is that it defaults to the first two channels of the TotalMix and so it is necessary to re-assign which channels are used by the DAW. As regards the SR and bit depth - I think this is set within the iConfig app and 24/96 is an option but I only use 24bit at 44.1.
