agreed.

devastating use of it at the end of 'the elephant man' where he lies down to die... blubbing for weeks...

thinking of classical stuff: Goreckis 3rd, 1st movement; the daddy. Just builds from nothing to this incredibly intense peak around 15 mins in. Strings, sopranos...

I'm not really one for remembering vocalists as lyrics and such usually come second place (after the mood the singing brings; not so much the words)

For one opera singers give me the jibbers, so I'd say they emote in the opposite direction.

For some reason 'Killing me softly' comes to mind either the fugees, or Flack.

And lately the track that does emote me, and constantly is shimmering somewhere inside my brain; starts with the lyrics: If I can, then you can

First off, there have been some killer artists already mention, ones that just lay me out:

-Norah Jones
-Willie Nelson
-Joni Mitchell
-Tori Amos
-Fred Astaire (SO right about his unselfconscious and pure singing style!! I'm glad he was mentioned!)
-Nick Cave ("Into My Arms" kills me)
-Peter Gabriel

Despite my urge to go the my CD rack and list every singer that has an effect on me (a list of... oh, at least 300...), I'll quickly list the ones that come to mind first that haven't been mentioned:

Tuck and Patti: Tuck's guitar work is brilliant, but Patti Cathcart's singing makes me tremble. Try their cover of Little Wing/Castles Made of Sand, or their (cover, also) Time After Time

Gord Downey (of the Tragically Hip): Here's a guy who started off with a somewhat imitative style, but eventually found his own voice. Love it!

Daniel Lanois: "Jolie Louise". Wow.

I'll stop at 3... it's too easy to get carried away.
