That's my problem too. I love FL and keep it close to my heart, but the workflow just pummels my brain for some reason. I end up quitting on it every time. I have to constantly run to the manual for even the simplest of things. I've never had that problem with any other DAW. God bless those who are able to zip right through FL Studio like it's nothing. I am so jealous of them. Can I have your autograph guys? :hihi:

Well, it seems they do, except for FL Studio. It was the same for the past few months (I can't find older copies than two or three months, but they all have the same six or seven DAWs listed at the bottom of the front cover.)

You could say that about any of the other DAWs - it matters because FLS is just as popular as some of the other DAWs they have a monthly article about. Do they hate Image Line or something?

Have they reviewed FL11? Or FL10? It seems like they have a bias against FL.

So, your experience = everybody else's experience.

Therefore FL Studio is no good. Why do SOS review several VSTis every month, if they're only aimed at recording audio?

I didn't say FL Studio is no good, merely implying that for audio it's nowhere near intuitive.
I envy folks that work in it; it looks cool, has imaginative tools..it's just not intuitive for me.
edit - Maybe SOS should have a section just for that reason alone, us guys who just don't get it, but would like to.

How does that shake out for all the other various recording mags? I stopped buying most of them long ago.

What about "Electronic Musician"? What's so special about SOS, other than the mag (at least used to be when I read it) rather expensive off the shelf?

Post

I like their (advanced) sound design articles, and the reviews are sometimes better (not just 90% describing the specifications).

Yep. I wanted to add this also. Not only does it lack multiple time signatures so you can't have a proper click track when needed, its overall organization of audio is not that good. Lack of proper audio editing and comping in playlist and a small fiddly mixer are some of the things that might hold back many pros who need to deal with live material.
No signature here!

I've been using it more lately, but it's workflow is certainly different.

It's just a kind of square peg in a round hole, some of them. If a product is not setup to be efficient at monitoring, building cue mixes, punching, and all that other stuff it will be a relative hassle for traditional linear studio multi-track recording.

You can get it done in any of them but few people doing that regularly would choose to do that with FL or Live or Bitwig.
exactly, if I started out with FL when I first got into recording it would be more normal for me (for lack of a better term). It can be all done in FL if you want but I kinda see the audio recording as a secondary function of FL. That is in no way meant to bash FL, it's just it's strengths lie elsewhere. One thing about Samp that doesn't get talked about much is how it handles audio waves, it does have a wave editor but the truth is there is very little (if anything) that cant be done without the wave editor (I haven't even opened the editor in years likely). If you click on the wave in the arranger it's faster and easier imo than to use the wave editor. I dont want to arm my track in the mixer and then have to go to the playlist to see the wave and then to edit it I need to open another window. But that's just my workflow so if someone else doesn't see my point it's all good :)

I couldn't understand it at first, then I watched this video, and it's been easy from then on (I never record audio, so your mileage may vary...):

I just find it a bit odd that they haven't reviewed FL10 or FL11, and don't even have a section on it - there are plenty of very successful artists who use FL Studio (who are listed on the Image Line site). It's no skin off my nose, I don't buy magazines.

For me, that would be a reason NOT to use FL Studio... if I cared about such things. :D
I started using it around '99. Back then it was one of the only music making programs that didn't require hardware instruments, or pre-made loops (Acid, Magix). :)

Another comparison pops up here: Switching from trackers to FL was like switching from DOS to Windows. ;)

please forgive me but I think you're missing a point here, some of us older folk have been recording in different ways forever and the thought of needing a video to explain how to record audio appears to be more complicated than it needs to be. Than you see another host where it's so straight forward you already know what to do which in turn is more comfortable. I cant speak for bluedad but myself I find when things suit my workflow and are comfortable it means less think and at least for me sometimes less think means more creativity.

Again, not saying anything against FL...it's just better at other stuff :)
