Exactly. How do you expect to earn a following when potential followers on music forums have no idea who you are or where to find your music? If you're posting on the internet, at a minimum, your artist name and links to your website should be right there for all to see every time you post.

In Germany there is a nifty little law since 1933 called "Gema Vermutung",that's really effective at preventing those efforts.

I basically make you burn 500€ forehand for your self organized little party night before you even can get your coat.
This money is always shared on a pyramidal system,most money get the people that have the most plays on TV/Radio etc.


This law assumes that you are playing commercial music even if you don't...
So, they send their spy's anywhere and bring you to court if you're not cooperating.

How would you do that without having the funds?

Seriously,the average citizen can't afford those "experiments" without going to jail after 3-4 attempts,possibly experiences a execute of attachment and being out of the society because of 100% money brokenness too.
There would be more to pay,the court the lawyer the collection agency,the fee,maybe i forgot something?

So is that 500 EUR per event or is it paid yearly by the venue? I'd guess it's a yearly fee paid by the venue, so that means finding a venue that's willing to put on an event. If the music isn't banging Dutch hardcore perhaps some local art gallery has an installation that could do with some nice sounds.

Obviously if you're putting on your own outdoor event it's a bit different and while 500 EUR is quite a bit of money, it might be something to save up for, or your friends chip in. Take donations on the gate to cover the costs. That's what some people who aren't me do

It's per event,I lost track on how much it is but reading sometimes the anger from DJ's and organizer's.
Art gallery,yeah that's happening all the time but it is mostly mouth propaganda so nothing that can give you a "real" venue (imo).

Now i think will make it much more complicated,if you don't mind,my previous post was pretty lame.
If you want to organize your own outdoor event you need to spend much more than 500€.

There are a lot of more costs,being it renting the place but you also need to calculate the security too,like emergency exit,fire prevention and so on.
You need a green light from the local fire brigade department,i don't think they will come for free.


You need to register it and getting a approval from the government too i think,hey, there are people outside they study those things.

If you got all this things done your only hope is that you will find enough people that drink like crazy on the event to compensate all the costs.


In a world where every cash machine is considered a possible "streaming medium" and every terminal has to pay a fee you want to seriously grow a fanbase?

Blink 182 once said that they wrote songs about girls so more girls would come to their concerts... And it worked. People like songs that they can relate to. They'd also advertise themselves as an "anti-drug" band and play at high school lunchtime until they got kicked out. Like them or hate them, they understood their audience well and catered to them.

Here's the most important rule, imho, about getting plays on your songs:

Know your audience.

Imagine there are hundreds, and later thousands, of people playing your songs. Who are they? / Who should they be? What kind of music do they like? (And therefore) why are they interested in your music? If you have no sense of the demographic of listeners that will be playing your tunes, it's little wonder nobody is playing them..

And yeah, this is why genres exist. People are quick to rant against labeling and the whole genre game, but it's absolutely there for a reason: there is too much stuff, and people require a way to cut through the noise. Enter genre. Whether it's a highschool kid choosing his way to stand out in the crowd with a band t-shirt, or an online loops library retailer figuring out how to sell 10,000 of their newest pack, it's the same thing: genre, style, and tailored audience. Anybody thinking "I'll be appreciated simply because my music is GOOD, no matter what genre it is" has a lot to learn about the realities of taste-making and consumer choice.

Maybe the OP already knows all this, I have no idea: he didn't say a word about what kind of music he makes or who should be listening to it. Apparently he uploaded Music X to soundcloud and is bummed that a million people didn't stop by to become fans

There are basically 4 ways of doing it:

1. Be incredibly talented and original
2. Play live music and get a following from your live music
3. Sleep with/be related to/blackmail a record company executive
4. Get an agent

Sitting around and hoping it will happen, even if you are one of a gazillion people sending music to one guy who has limited time will not make it happen.

#4 is the most likely way for it to happen for you if you can't do the 3 above it.

An agent will be a definite plus. Just make sure he knows the market you're involved with.

Many people from my local scene made it big on a national and even international level.

* All of them were extremely dedicated to music from a young age, both making music, going to gigs, being part of the scene. For the love of music.

* All of them were lucky enough to have friends, contacts, fellow members on the scene who were willing to spend a lot of energy and time on promoting them - organising gigs, festivals, putting out records, establishing contacts abroad.

* The most successful of them all in terms of international fame, would do everything possible develop a network in the international music scene ... hang out in places where certain persons were known to hang out and take every opportunity to establish contact, always with an eye to reaching as high as possible in the hierarchy (even if it meant treating lesser figures - and "friends" - like nobodies).
