After several, several hours of trying to get my XP-30 to to be used as a controller im still at a loss as to how midi works or even how to get the xp-30 to play synths in FL.
Does anyone know of a really comprehensive guide on hooking up a external keyboard to play software synths in FL?
In the 'remote control input' area I have my 'roland serial midi input' selected and under 'controller type' I have '(generic controller)' selected.
Can anyone help?

I understand read the manual...but ta...Im still not doing something right.
Ive done what you said to do before but Im missing something still.
Ive read both the manuals for FL and the XP-30 and still nothing.
I can get the XP-30 to play a midi file and listen to it thru headphones connected to it but I just want to use it as a controller for the synths in FL.
Im still pluging away at it tho....thanks for the help.

these are dumb questions, but we have to go through them
have you got a cable from the XP midi out to the PC midi in?
how come you get a "Roland serial Midi In" option - the XP30 is a standalone keyboard, is it not? What is your MIDI interface in your PC?
have you selected that Midi Interface as the remote control input?
What Midi channel is your XP-30 transmitting on? Is it transmitting midi at all? Do you have another synth module that you could check that your XP-30 is transmitting midi?
I know it sounds patronising - it's not meant to be , believe me.
If you answer most of these questions, you should get pretty close to a working system

yesHave you selected in the Options menu "Enable midi remote control" ???
yes,i have the serial cable, the xp-30 has an option to not use a standard midi cable but a serial cable that plugs in the back of the keyboard and and sends and recieves signals like standard midi.have you got a cable from the XP midi out to the PC midi in?
It has worked before.A few years back before I upgraded to winXP home it worked great.
When I installed the(what I thought was latest drivers)it now has that option along with my soundcards 'A.SB Live' options.how come you get a "Roland serial Midi In" option - the XP30 is a standalone keyboard, is it not? What is your MIDI interface in your PC?
I have in every window on the XP-30 where a channel is adjustable I have them set at channel 1 and like i say it only can play a midi file thru the earphones from a file on my desktop. It wont control a synth within fruityloops. What Midi channel is your XP-30 transmitting on? Is it transmitting midi at all?
Do you have another synth module that you could check that your XP-30 is transmitting midi?
No...the xp-30 is the only midi device I have.
I dont mind because I basically know nothing about any of this and like I say everytime I read the manuals on midi I get lost and unless there are diagrams or pictures to actually show what the arrangement should look like then I get really lost.....lolI know it sounds patronising - it's not meant to be , believe me.

Im still hanging in there and Im not giving up and I know its really simple whatever the problem is.
No you guys...you cant make me feel dumb because.....ah...Im already there....lol
No thanks for the help and Im going to keep at it and Im going to double check everything mentioned here.
Thanks again for the help you guys

Can't really help you aside from stating that i personally use Roland XP-30 as a primary midi controller for FL Studio. I have it connected using standard MIDI cables going into a 8 port MIDI interface.

And whats the difference between the USB and the GamePort cables?
If I were to use the USB would it make it easier to connect and have everything seen?
I dont have nothing in the GamePort and have a few extra usb open.
Im just wondering if its a driver issue....

I have a generic gameport midi interface attached to my SoundBlaster Live card and it works a treat. Never had any problems.
I believe some users have had problems with certain USB midi interfaces.
Go and spend $10 at your local cheap and cheerful computer shop on a cheapo gameport midi interface.
You know it makes sense

I personally use this one
http://www.edirol.com/products/info/um880.html
but you don't need anything that big just to get midi control ofcourse.
