The biggest problem for me is the vocal panned to the far left....
That kind of song should be mixed arround the vocals and like this it doesn't work for me. Try to center the vocals and place the other instruments from that point.
Turn up the BASS !!! Don't hear what kind of bass it is but a nice warm loud upright bass would do it in this song.
The piano sound quality is not very good... seems to saturate. You recorded it ? You may try to find a piano soundfont, record midi notes and play the piano in SFZ... Should be easier to mix.
For the vox.... buy a mic and voxformer ( http://www.voxengo.com )

There is a nice jazzy-retro-french mood in your song. :D
Salut Ixox,

I do agree that the vox is bad quality. I'll have to redo that. I have downloaded the demo of voxformer to see what it does.
As for the piano, the sound was made like that by purpose, I wanted it to have some kind of a retro sound that suits the song.

I'm glad you like the song :D

Back to tracktion to give it another try now :)

Sounds lo-fi and quirky :D

OK, maybe the vocals do sound a little bit like they are part of a different record sometimes... But having the vocals punchy and upfront is a nice effect.. I think maybe centring the vocals a little and a smidgeon of the same reverb that's on the rest of the song might help bring them a little closer together.

I LIKE the saturated piano... Makes it sound like it was from an old 78 record 8)

Generally though, I like the DIY sound of this :D
Thanks Griels,

Everybody agrees that the vox is my main problem
I got some other tips here allso, bandpass filters, EQ and compress, perhaps this will make it better :?:
I'll have to redo this. Need some money to buy another mic now

I think most has been said here allready. Did you change the track allready btw? It seems that the vox is centered now, but she only needs to get out of the closet to make for a better recording.

And except for maybe one or two unglitchy changes in the sax; I love what that is doing on this track. The bass can be made a tad fuller though.

Other then that I'd have to agree with griels that this allready sounds quite right.

Welcome to KvR btw :)

Thank you very much Mystahr :)

Now I have to release my wive from that closet do redo the vox. I just hope she doesn't run away once she is free :-o :D

And thanks you for the welcome, when I first visited those forums I hesitated a litle. Listening to a couple of songs here, I noticed that a lot here made (very good) modern songs, so I didn't know if music like mine had a place here :?
I must say your guys are great, very open minded and give excellent advice

This is a good song, and with some improvements in the final mix it should be great! :) The piano sounds distorted, probably because of too high level when recording it. The vocals should be panned in the middle, and remove that ugly reverb! ;) I think the vocals in this track should be more "intimate", so use compression and don't have too much reverb to get that feel. You don't need expensive mics to get good vocal tracks, use compression. The saxophone sounds good! :) For an example of a song with vocals check out this thread http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47005

Hello Zymac,
Iv' read the tread you mentioned and listened to your track. :)
I love the song, has a very nice groove
From a musical point of view I could give just one comment... it would be perfect if it was 1 minutes shorter. But that's just my opinion.
Listening to you track, I realise how much I have to learn  but I'm a musician and not a sounde engineer :? So I hope it will come with experience I suppose. If you can achieve that quality with your equipment I must be able to achief that after a lot of trying.

Thanks for listening to my track and your advise :)

Hi bucodi.

I`d try to give you my opinions of how this can be improved.
I could be of some assistance if I knew what you would like it to sound like.

It would also help me if you were to describe how each instrument/vocal was recorded.(MICing/room description/any directly connected instruments and how thay are connected to the pc/any effects,on what sounds and how they are set.

With this info,we here at kvr and myself, can get closer to what you are after.

Take some tips from some of the guys here, ie:center the vocals, etc...but don't lose the quirkiness of this song! 8) I can here this song as a sound track to an indie film....remember, opinions are just that. This song is good because it is different in my opinion. :)

There are some great tips to improve the quality of the sound and recording but try to keep the feel. Nice tune!

What I will do is make a mix of all the raw tracks and publish it.
Then perhaps you could explain what I can apply as effect. Wouldn't that be a good idea :?:
In the mix you heard i applied a lot of effect on the different track, just like a kid who has a new toy  I overdone a couple of things I think :?

Thanks for your proposal Barry :D

Thanks Dano,

It is the first time that I do this, so I have a lot to learn  And the more opinions I get the more I'll learn from it.

Agreed, top wee number! Sometimes lof-fi is best too. :D

Ok.If you want to post each and all dry/raw tracks here,I will for sure listen to them.
If you would like examples of mixes,I will do one,(and descibe what I did),but I can`t say others will, but that would be nice!

Also do you want a live sounding mix,or one that sounds studio produced?
Tell a bit about what you like.
I`d do this so that you can learn some things...not doing a mix to see how slick I can make it.

Thanks for your proposal Annado, I sure need some help here. As I said before I'm a musician at it is my very first attempt to mix something, normally I just play live...
I am uploading now, a mix of all the raw tracks. No effects whatsoever and all panned in the centre.
When I listen to that I realise how badly I screwed it up

It is here :
www.bucodi.com/rony/rawmix1.mp3

I would like it to sound as a studio produced one. Something you hear on commercial CD's :)

I would really to try this myself, so that I can learn, so I can take all the advice I can get :help:

Is that OK with you ? If I don't get it right I will post the tracks separatly so that you can show me how to do it.

I wish I would have found Kvr earlier ... :?

Rony

Post

Actually,I will need each track mp3 as separate downloads.
I can`t work with it as one stereo download.

Is this possible for you?

This is the best I could make out of the original with an hours effort. The original is nearer being really good than it at first appears. EQ, compression, reverb and panning. I like this song.
