..the album "raising sand" by robert plant..I loved that one so I
listened to some other albums by r. plant but didn`t like them too much..
shouldn`t be too countryesk though..

actually it`s supposed to be a present for my girlfriend´s birthday ; )
could also go in this direction...songwriter stuff:

...but a bit more lighthearted would be great!

I recommend "Slush" (1997) by OP8, a project-band by Lisa Germano, Howe Gelb and Calexico. Or "The Lion's Roar" by First Aid Kit.
Melodic ballads, perfect for a girlfriend's birthday

Otherwise, there's plenty of this genre, from Palace/Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy to Smog (Bill Callahan), Songs:Ohia, Dakota Suite, Adem, etc.
You could also look for some slowcore bands, like Red House Painters, Codeine or Spain. They're great.
