What is good, and what is bad?
I bought it but actually get refunded yesterday.
The filters sound amazing, the GUI is heavenly designed and even
with its "basic" structure this little beast has a lot to offer imo.
It really sounds good and can represent a great new AD weapon.
BUT what didn't click for me was the monophony and that there's no
arpeggiator. It's frustrating for me not to be able to play pads or
some chip arpeggios with Basic...

+1 An arp is so nice

But it is possible to use freeware stuff like Kirnu and run it through that.

Well I have my beloved Phonec, Chipsounds and Zebra so I'm pretty covered...just my gas
for AD stuff. Like I said, Basic sounds good, I know it's a bit stupid to say so but I
really loved the sound of its filters and oscillators. The synth has a great bite and can sound
pretty thick. And combinations of its three osc are cool to play with...It could sound
awesome if it had polyphonic fonction.

I'm really quite enjoying this synth but as mentioned above the thing it really is missing is a poly mode. I don't miss an arp on it as I would just tend to drive it from the M4L monosequencer if I wanted to do that. In keeping with it's concept as a learning tool a mode button which would let you select between mono, polyphonic, paraphonic and duophonic would be a really useful tool especially for someone who is enjoying softsynths and is considering spending the more significant amount of money on a hardware analogue synth. That mode toggle could be really useful for someone who's keen to get something that fits with their own playing style.

I do really enjoy the sound of the filters in Basic - initially I was hesitant about the oscillators but I think that was psychological as I knew how they were made. Once I got over that pre-conception issue and just listened I found myself really enjoying the sound. I also had an initial frustration in that I was bumping up against limitations of it's design. Again, once I got over myself and accepted it for what it is and worked with the limitations I found myself finding interesting sounds at the edges of it's limitations. In a funny way, it gave me some ideas for doing things differently with more complex synths like Zebra, Massive, Synthsquad.

So, is it worth the cash? That's a tough one. I don't buy into some of the opinions expressed earlier in this thread about freeware equivalents making this something of a unnecessary purchase. This has character enough, and it sounds good enough that it would definitely see great use. However, there is a wee bit of a case to say it's a luxury item - if you were entirely freeware based and you wanted to purchase your first commercial plugin to expand your setup then I don't think this would be that high up your list for consideration. The limitations matter in a generalist sense. That said, if it was updated to include a poly mode then suddenly this starts to lookn like a reasonably priced, great sounding workhorse that could easily be a go-to synth.

Just my two pence.

I thought $39 was intro price for Basic, but they've decided to keep that as regular price?

I think that was always their intention, as it's for entry level and education.

Not according to the launch notice:

"Basic has an introductory price of $39.00 until September 4th, 2014. After that, Basic will go to its normal price of $49.00."

Not that it makes a super big difference, but get a feeling that the "intro price" was used as a carrot to get users to buy it before the price supposdly was going to go up

Ah right sorry. My bad...

So it's still 39?!

Yeah, says so at the site :)

Really nice little synth, easy to get to grips with, and easy on the CPU, and Audio Damages copy protection scheme now is veeeeery nice :tu:

Yeah, I bought it as well. Sounds really good (for a small synth). Can't go wrong with that copyright alright. :)

I like it because it is simple and you can get a nice range of sounds. But to me it just doesn't have good enough sound quality.

I think it sounds good for what it is, and I like the filter. But it can't really compare to something like Dune 2, etc.

I love the sound of this thing but the gui is just awful. No contrast between elements and the letters are so tiny.

I can do without poly as this it more like a bass synth for me, but FFS just fix the gui! and add unison.

Please.

Looks like Audio Damage is using that GUI as a template, as Fuzz+Three goes to show

The release of Basic is planned around the end of the upcoming week for
a price of $39. Always cool to see a new AD's audio toy ! :)
This thing is a beast, I have the non-serial version that splice.com was
giving away in february, it's solid version of v1.01 which is fine for me
I just love this thing and can't get enough dirt with the filter cutoff low
on the LPF with the ENV settings at 50%, it makes great basses and leads
I have used it a few times in projects I hope to release a free bank for it
soon with 32 presets, that's half a 64 bank preset banks which is half a
128 preset bank so a quarter bank of 128 presets for free, and maybe
I will extend the bank to 128 and sell it but the 32 preset bank will be free
I got this and I got Cableguys Filtershaper 3 on splice.com
but they make you add your friends so whatever.
