Hello, I have always been under the impression that selecting "downloads disabled" in your soundcloud account, meant that. I notice a variety of links that offer to download files that are meant to be for listening only. Comments please .

Well, a quick Google using the words 'download disabled tracks from soundcloud' says ... Yes We Can. Though it's obviously not cool. Definitely not endorsed by the Obama Administration.

If the owner of the track doesnt want it downloaded, you should respect that.

yes.

a good rule to go by is...if they can hear it, they can have it.

sooo...if you dont want people to be able to copy your music without your permission...dont ever let anyone play it.

the only way to combat this is to only ever upload crappy sounding bitrates that nobody would want to copy, which will make people think your music sucks.

its a lose lose situation.

Thanks for your responses. I have been uploading virtual compositions to soundcloud, under the assumption that the files were for listening only. To make matters worse, I upload .wav files, which makes me anonymous, according to audacity. MP3's, at least give the option to attach your name to the file. Any ideas where to post files that would make them safe ?

as i just mentioned...no. there is no way to make your files "safe" and listenable.

this has been true since the old MP3.com years ago (which also offered the same option).
as a user - if they don't want you downloading it, you shouldn't.

as a content creator - there's no such thing as a 'listening only' audio file - if you can stream it, someone will figure out a way to capture it. just reality. in the mp3.com days, most browsers actually downloaded the file behind the scenes, and then started a player - so it was nearly trivial to just go find the file in your temp directory (or, in some cases, shift-click to save directly).

nowadays, it's a _lot_ harder to do... soundcloud, for instance, streams through its own player afaik - there is never a complete track anywhere on your hard drive. so you have to use more complex methods (which i won't get into, not looking to give people ideas). but as a content creator, you should never assume your IP is safe behind a so-called 'download only' link.... safer than it used to be, and probably safe from trivial attacks, but never safe from the determined...

There is a way to make them safe and listenable.

One site I came across had songs streaming but with the word 'preview' spoken over it at odd intervals.

that doesnt make it "safe", it makes it undesirable (maybe). not at all the same thing.

how is that safe? especially for that. if i were so inclined i could sample the crap out of that without it even being the slightest bit of a hassle. it would require exactly 2 mouse clicks...and then some very easy editing.

thats about the worst example you could have given, simply because the nature of that is such that people wouldnt even want it for the entire tracks (i.e. listening), thus making the "preview" audio over it just about useless. at one point it played for a full 15 seconds without even saying "preview".

i think you miss my point.

that audio is in no way "safe" in the slightest, not even a little bit. its not safe...at all.

Can you download music from soundcloud that is selected "downloads disabled" by the owner ?
