After having had many lockup problems after having had installed a new virus software version (Kaspersky), I´ve de-installed it again. But now I have a scan disk problem (Windows ME). It begins to scan and ... begins to scan and .... After 10 times there is a message that it couldn´t be done because Windows or another application is writing on the disk. But I have closed ALL other background applications before, only Explorer is active.
Some specialists here who can give help for this problem? Thanks in advance.

I had the same probs with ZoneAlarm...
Check that there´s no software left of you virusprogram.
Also, couldn´t you start in safe mode, and run scan disk from there?

Maybe this would work, but the problem is that scan disk is also not working when it should do after a not regular shutdown (reset button).

Did you try running scan disk in safe mode?Try that...

That's an old scandisk problem. You cannot really scan the system disk as windows will regularly access it and then scandisk will interrupt and start again.

If you don't see scandisk after a non-regular shutdown, then maybe you (or some "optimizer tool") disabled this.

You should try it from DOS mode (or was ME the first shot without access to DOS anymore?)

If you cannot select "Shutdown to DOS mode" from the startmenu, then create a boot disk (if you don't already have one) and boot from that.

Then from DOS prompt enter "scandisk /F C:". I'm not too sure anymore about the options, though. It's been a while that I used DOS...

Maybe time to upgrade to XP? (Or 2000, which I would prefer)

Try this...get into windows, go to start -> run -> type in "msconfig" (without the quotes). Choose "Diagnostic Mode" and click Apply/OK. It will ask you to reboot, let it do so. This should allow the scandisk to complete when you boot up the next time. After scandisk has completed, run msconfig again and put it back to normal mode.

It works in Safe mode, although it´s not very comfortable to do this. Until some days ago I had no problems with scandisk - strange.
