Buy a Slate plugin? They come with free iLok's, you'd just need to pay shipping. VCC RC Tube would probably be the cheapest way in if you go that route. However, not cheap if you're not interested in any Slate plugins.

I recall there would be an AirEQ "regular" and an AirEQ Premium. Did they skip that concept and only released the Premium version?

As of this moment, only "Premium" is listed in the shop.
I think they're still catching up on that end after the beta, the massive work behind the scenes and what have you.

The "Standard" version won't have the FFT view, neither will it have the freely configurable Character (locked to either/or Fire/Water/Neutral) and Strength mode (it's locked to 50/100/150%). Also there won't be a 5.1 version. Else the feature set is the same.

After such a long time of silence (it must be 5 years?) a new version with some improvements and a lot of new features. I like the smooth curves and the new options Fabrice has included.
M/S support for every band, a new "Earth" band is added to the old and still existing "Air" band which is some kind of shelving (but I think it's a bit more than only a shelving filter).

It is (basically, at least IMO) another shelving filter at lower/higher values. Though the only person that can answer it in more detail is Fabrice (either directly on GS, or through his videos).

One thing to note however, each band can have an "independent" type of Character. Not that easy to pull of right out of the box though (needs some messing with the settings per band). Still, highly customizable.

Another cool feature request that was ported, was "stepped gain" values. The gain can be incremented/decremented in 0,25dB, 0,5dB, 1dB and 2dB steps. The Q values can also be stepped - good especially for beginners or if you're a mouse jockey and be like "meh, I use the mouse, but I don't want to hold down hotkeys".

Even if this is a 5+2+2 band EQ (technically, 5 bell, 2 ultra-high/low shelf, one LP/HP each), you can pull off a lot of things already. Unless you need to finetune bits and pieces in a mastering chain - then you need to stack it, or use a freeform EQ with 32-64bands.

Eiosis installer seems to ignore the custom installation path for some reason. Even if you choose to install it on different drive (and not C:) it still does install shundreds of megabytes data on C: drive.

Yeah, it's not a big deal, but I don't have any extra disk space left on drive C (55 GB SSD, 6 GB empty space left and it's dedicated to system, Windows 7) and I use to install all the audio software on my F: drive. Eiosis installer dumps the program on C: (Program Data) and only uninstaller (+ VST2) on my F: drive.

You mentioned it yourself, the EIOSIS software is reliant on the Program Data folder of Windows (7 and up), which resides on the installation HDD. Sadly, no work around. If you install VST2 and VST3 in both 32bit and 64bit, you have to work with about 700MB.

The programming team is aware of that, and I got note that this will be addressed in a future update. Part of the huge filesize are a certain lack of optimizations (graphics). But the beta was running for over a year, and I think Fabrice finally wanted to get the EQ out to focus on different plugins (remember, he's also working for Slate Digital), while the fine tuning/optimization can be done in parallel.

Which brings me to this:

Just out of curiosity, how much CPU does it use? (and in comparison with DMG Audio EQs? )
This is very important for a "go-to" plug where multiple instances are needed.

I'm on an Intel Core i7 920, overclocked to 3,6GHz and 6GB RAM. It barely touches the ASIO meter in Cubase 7.5.x (think about 2% or so), and in Wavelab it's an absolute non-issue.

Load time can be a bit slow, which is an iLok driver issue however.


Though Wavelab runs into the infamous "VST3 Audio Forward Bug" if you're using the VST3 version in there. That means: real-time usage is possible. Rendering results in a bypassed signal stream. No matter if you use the Audio Montage, the Batch Processor or the Master Rack.

This is still listed high on a "stuff to fix/improve" list. Though since AirEQ doesn't utilize side-chaining, you're save with using the VST2 version.

The frustration is understandable. If I'd be one of the old customers, and would have run into the closed doors years ago, I'd be just as ticked off and highly skeptical.

Sadly, the background story is not that simple.
Just to scratch the surface: a split of company partners, ongoing quarrels, "lost" code, etc. Fabrice had to start from scratch - which was unfortunate for current customers of E2-Deesser and ELS Vocoder (i.e. Logic users were stuck on 32bit versions!). Parallel to that, he started at Slate Digital. Around that time was the switch from iLok1 to iLok2 as well (which caused a change of the engines for both Slate Digital and Eiosis).

Sh*t happens, things can get delayed. But what's most important - he delivered. And as mentioned earlier... former customers got AirEQ for free. The Premium version at that as well, not just the "standard" version only.

Got a reply from Eiosis Support. Yippie.

Made a new Account, logged in, clicked on "My Licenses", entered my serial number in the "Register New Product" form, clicked on "Register serial and get you iLok code", made sure to own an iLok 2 and to have an account at www.ilok.com, installed and launched the iLok License Manager, redeemed my iLok code within the iLok License Manager, transfered my iLok license on my iLok dongle, dowloaded the installer, launched the installer, started Ableton and had a quick check to make sure the Plug-in is loading ...

Well I've barely even tried it yet but I'm sure I will tomorrow.

Initial impressions: I love the "Water" EQ curve, very clean, will be using that a lot. Not sure what to make of "Fire", apart from it's a quick way to access a high-Q?

Love the new "Earth" low-end band, and like its predecessor, it'll take a little getting used to, but is a very solid, vital EQ for $99.

I initially didn't realize that AirEQ was designed by Fabrice (until I checked out the threads). I seem to remember that Dom and Roland thought very highly of the first release.

And I really like the Slate plugs so I knew this would be great.

Fabrice is a good guy, and as I recall there are plans for a new, enhanced vocoder. Maybe it's not coming soon enough, but it will come.
