I am really pumped about fl Studio. Just got it! :D :D :D
Here is a question I haven't figured out.

I have no outboard gear. The tutorial files demonstrate how to use a vsti in an effect channel as opposed to opening it up in channel in the step sequencer (Say, synth 1, for example)

Why would I want to do this? What are the advantages of holding instruments in the fx channels instead of the step sequencer?

Oh, I am just giddy with questions right now. Please excuse the silly grin.

many VSTi allow for using the FX aspect of the synth as inserts on an audio signal.

This may be what FL Studio is refering to, but I'm not sure. I AM sure you can use synths like Pentagon as a dedicated FX plug, along with most NI synths, & many others.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, so you can run live audio into the instrument.

makes sense, thanks.
As for the NI stuff doubling for fx, I will take your word for it, but I wouldn't know - I survie on freebies more or less and no SE stuff came to mind that were dual purpose like that. So this feature is really important if you like a particular effect on a VSTI then.(?)

Oh, would this let me use, say arpocalypse on a step sequencer channel to feed midi to synth1 in an fx channel?

I am really enjoying the synths that come with FL Studio!

Thanks for the comments.

A lot of the NI stuff comes as both a VSTi and VSTfx. Take for instance FM7 and Pro-53... both are synths and you'd normally want to use them as an instrument, unless you want to run a live audio input through them (both have this feature) then you'd use the FX version.

I haven't tried Arpocalypse... is it a MIDI plugin? If it is, FL Studio doesn't support it. If it is a VST plugin, then yes, you could load it into FL and have it send MIDI data to another synth... be it in the Step Seq or the FX Mixer. You would use the "MIDI Input/Output Port Number" in the VST Wrapper (see the Help file on this, settings are a bit hidden).

I enjoy them too. A lot of them seem very simple, but are capapble of suprising things. 3x OSC doesn't look fancy at all, took a while for it to grab my attention, but now I use it all the time. Amazingly I can always get the sound I'm looking for from that thing.

I'm actually d/l'ing the arp thing now. It's a vst, so I think it will work. Of course, FL has its own arp, so it is a moot point: it's kind of like revving the engine on a new car -

I'm not really going anywhere with this yet, it's just nice to know I've got the power if I wanted. :)

Just tried Arpocalypse in FL, and it works fine. You'll need to add a MIDI Out and set its output port to, say 10. Add Arpocalypse as an FX. Set its input port to 10 and its output port to say 11. Now add an instrument and set its input port to 11.

Unfortunately it won't work with native FL instruments - they don't accept MIDI

don't meant to carjack but since it's about your fruity luv in general. I'd just like to ask, are all arp apps created equal or are there some favorites. I've never used them and would like to get into them, what are the good free ones to use with fruity besides its own?

Post

there are many different arp apps really

xoxos has a really freaky one on his page for algorythmic stuff and so on...

just check out a few
