Omnisphere - worth $500?

How CPU efficient is Omnisphere? Can you use multiple instances on multiple tracks? Or is there a way to use multiple sounds in one instance across multiple tracks?

Every time I've ever considered possibly buying Omnisphere, the interest starts because of the sample-rom.
It's the synth engines which end up making me feel it's not keeping up to its asking price.
Good Rompler, Decent VA. Not worth 500.00 though.
But I'm just as critical to price for Kontakt sample libraries and have only jumped on those during sales where they were 50-90% off.

Not to mention the Live- and Stack-Mode. Or the gorgeous groove lock = drag a midi-file to the arpeggiator or an envelope to imprint its groove. Still unique. Still awesome.zerocrossing wrote:Oh yeah, and the orb modulation pad is pure brilliance.

On my 8 core xeon system...it does really well. BUT. YMMV.
I would say it is a bit of a bear on average systems.

Dependent on the CPU of course. But I've choked every computer I've got to demo it on.memyselfandus wrote:How CPU efficient is Omnisphere? Can you use multiple instances on multiple tracks? Or is there a way to use multiple sounds in one instance across multiple tracks?
However, I believe that's not a fair comparison as it's obvious to me that GC & SA are clueless to do any more than the bare minimum in displaying it. I have no doubt that most people wouldn't have a problem running it on their own system.
But that's perhaps the best reason from the consumer side of why Spectrasonics needs to figure out someway to let people download an evaluation on their own system.

Those Kontakt libraries are pretty good as well.BBFG# wrote:Every time I've ever considered possibly buying Omnisphere, the interest starts because of the sample-rom.

As for the price of Omnisphere...when I did get the thing it did set me back a ways...

No...definitely not outdated. I'm thinking like some of slower quadcores here...BBFG# wrote:Well, average, but not necessarily outdated.

there are a dozen or so patches/sound sources @500mb-2gb range. They are keys/strings etc. Compared these large patches to say kontakt libraries, remove them from 40gb and i'd bet it'd be around 14gb.firepile wrote:Nope. But with 40GB of high quality samples and 5000+ (mostly amazing) presets the price is acceptable. At least to me.pdxindy wrote:MachineClaw wrote:I am curious about the sort of pricing that people accept. Sample libraries are generally accepted to cost more than synths. If Omnisphere were somehow identical in capability due to synthesis, but had no sample library, would $500 be an acceptable price to as many people?
Compare that to Alchemy Complete - $849 for 14GB of samples and 4000 presets.

Subjective really. I don't consider them outdated, but understand and accept if others do.firepile wrote:Neither average nor outdated.BBFG# wrote:Well, average, but not necessarily outdated.
They do seem rather common place in other VI synths now though. So IMO that makes them average in today's market.
