Hanz Meyzer wrote:Here is my suggestion for a more informative voting system:

What about introducing an additional optional voting for sound design, composition, mixing & mastering, that does not influence the main voting? This could be very interesting for the creator...
Hey yeah as Z said I have a basic GUI down for this, I'll work on it a bit, and show it here soon. It would be an optional switch, so no one has to be bugged by more features / doohickies. :)

How does one judge sound design though? Some people use presets, or start with presets and just make minor tweaks. Composition/arrangement and mixing/mastering are a lot easier to judge IMO. Not trying to rain on parades here...it's too cold in Denver for rain right now anyway. ;)

Well, Since it optional and has no influence on results, it doesn't matter if someone used only presets or designed by hand, I would say. The creator will know, if he wants to honor himself for used presets that he did not create.

For people that actually created the sounds, this vote could be quite interesting. On the other side selecting the right presets in conjunction with others also needs some experience and wisdom.

So the category could be named like "sound design/selection"

What I want to do is allow custom categories, for example, maybe one month I want to do:
Sound design
Mixing
Creativity

But next month, I decide to add another category called 'Composition'

Also I want to have custom weighted values. So let's say sound design is less important than creativity, for example.

I think that will solve any issues of opinion or category, etc. It could come with some boring default categories, and one can edit as they wish.

I would start out with the 3 that I tell everyone:

Sound design / selection
Composition / creativity
Production / mix

Everything weighted evenly for simplicity.

Not bad at all! :)

I still can't believe Atlantis hasn't made it into OSC yet...

it only takes 5 minutes with the manual to eradicate confusion and clue you in to the awesome power of ATLANTIS!!!!
It's Modulation Paradise...(not to mention you can import your own one-cycle waveforms into the oscillators!)

@z.prime don't forget the criteria of "pushing the boundaries of the synth"! personally that's the first thing i look for in this comp. i thought that was why it's called "One-Synth-Challenge," as in "how much can you get out of just one synth?" Some of you regular producers are so bloody consistent with your songwriting and soundcrafting, that it literally doesn't matter what synth it was.

and i still say the only way to ensure honest feedback is ANONYMOUS VOTING. though i suppose that could come at the cost of the community and interest generated by personal interactions.

Totally agree - I suggested this one a long time ago... but now that I switched to the dark side, I might have to skip it, if it was chosen. :(

Recent suggestions sound nice!

Yeah I also switched to the dark side :borg: And I read that the dark side is taking over regarding audio. Atlantis looks awesome, but no dark side support. That's so last century

Yep, that's how I'd do it as well - and how I try to judge/score when I vote.

Definitely a crazy synth :)

Honest feedback requires people to let go of their ego / pride, etc, and listen to what others say, and on the other end it requires wording the feedback carefully so it's useful - not just like 'that part sucks'. It's kinda tough actually, we spend so much time working on a tune, and it's our little baby in a way, and don't want to hear criticism, but it works wonders if done right! :)

Wow, amazing synth. :tu:
Original site seems to be down? Got it via archive.org.
Edit: now I can access the site.

Site is up for me here: http://jeremyevers.com/atlantis/

It's a shame it's not been updated or open sourced, though. It is a very good synth but has a few crash bugs and it's hard to edit the envelopes in detail...

hmm i never had any crashes in reaper. btw the envelopes are pretty unconventional but you can hold ctrl for fine control and shift for moving an isolated point without affecting the others and you can combine modifiers. right click deletes, can't remember if alt does anything.

plus, this might be just the thing to revive the devs interest in his synth...

Past captains of the OSC have looked at this synth, but as Z pointed out it was too unstable. I'll have another take at it though, and check it out. A lot of people have said good things.

However, everyone should know that in order to be in the OSC, you have to have a stable synth, that undergoes quite strenuous stress testing, and when time permits, on multiple daws.

####################################################################################
If people want to go ahead and test this synth, please report in detail (I can put this in form on a website / google site later on):
Synth and Version [ ]
Daw Used [ ]
Version number of Daw [ ]
Operating System [ ]

(Now Please enter some notes in midi)
Maximum # of instances your PC can handle before latency [ # ]
Amount of RAM that it takes up [ # mb ]
% of CPU that it takes up on each core: Core1 = #%, Core 2 = #%, etc
Can you duplicate the tracks and maintain sound? [ yes / no (explain) ]
Can you remove tracks without problems? [ yes / no (explain) ]
Can you save the project, and reload with everything the same? [ yes / no (explain) ]
####################################################################################

^That's a good starter - it mainly concerns stability, which is vital
