Fascinating question - I have to admit I never knew about the large address stuff when building an app.

I'll set the large address flags for the next build, though I've not got a machine that I can test it on, so you'll have to let me know if it works or not..

Cool, thanks lots. I'm really suprised by this whole thing because even with DFD on I have edits that are just pushing the 2 gig mark. I'm suprised that I haven't seen these issues raised over at the northernsounds forum.

Even if DFD actually worked flawlessly it's still pushing my machine to the point where screen update is so stilted that it's a pain to work with, whereas from RAM everything is super-smooth and CPU is around 40%.

On top of this, DFD seems to cause more crashes. The NI Kompakt player is disgustingly buggy and they really don't seem arsed about bringing out fixes.

I think you're probably pushing the limits of your slow RAM, and isn't AMD 2400 the recommended minimum for DFD and Kompakt? How much you want to bet if you switched to DDR333 memory or better the problems would go away, with a proc/mobo to support it (I didn't look at what your mobo/cpu combo supports, so forgive me on that one...)

I've just had someone on a tech support forum tell me that the MOBO only supports 3GB RAM if it's PC2700 or higher. I haven't seen any mention of this in the manual.

What's the odds that the Kompakt player would also need modification to run with 3GB?

I'm considering moving my hard drives around to see if I can get better performance. I have a PCI RAID controller that I use as an IDE expansion card. If I move one of my drives to this is it going to affect my drive letters and also the Kompkt player system ID? It's going to be ridiculous if I'll need to wait for a response from NI every time I test a new configuration.

Update:

Jules made the necessary changes and it's worked. I'm now running 2.5 GB RAM with EWQLSO, so far with no problems. I'm about to try 3GB. It's bloody good - no need for disk streaming. I can run an entire orchestra and have CPU at 30 - 40%.

It's great that it worked (well done Jules). I'm almost surprised even though I know that there must be few apps that use that method (databases etc.)

I was very (pleasantly) suprised. Seems like this type of thing almost always ends in some kind of tremendous cock-up.

Awesome dude! Glad that worked for ya! Just another one of those 'case studies' of where you think something might not work, but it does. Great. :)
