VST instruments shown as MIDI channels in Cubase SE mixer

In cubasis the VST instruments were shown as audio channels in the mixer, but in cubase SE (bought it yesterday) they are displayed as MIDI channels. can i change that?

forgive my ignorance, as i'm still at cubase 5.1.
audio or midi, what is the difference as far as the mixer goes?
