Hi guys

I'm looking for a powerful granular effect for real time processing of audio signal. Stuff like Sound Guru's The Mangle is great but (unfortunately) it can only process samples. I'm after something like Melda's MMultiBandGranular (or something like SugarBytes' Turnado but with more features).

MMultiBandGranular is a very interestig and potent plugin. I especially like the multi-band processing of the signal and its fantastic modulation capabilities. But there are some things I don't like about this nice plugin: it doesn't do reverse playing of the grains (or at least I couldn't find this feature) and it doesn't seem to be capable of producing stutter-like effects. There's also another feature I'm looking for in such a plugin: the possibility to process separately each band's grains with different effects/filters. For example, to be able to send the grains resulting from the first band thru a comb filter followed by an EQ and reverb, and the grains resulting from the second band (in the case you split the spectrum in just two bands) thru a distortion unit and a delay.
So, is there such a plugin? (maybe a Reaktor effect?)

Cheers

PS: I've also checked CrusherX but I find it way too complex and not at all user-friendly. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

The melda granulator definitely will reverse grains. I know this from the public beta of the Melda synth which had the granulator as an insert effect. I can't remember exactly how one did reverse grains in the melda plugin but the guy is pretty good at answering questions and it's definitely possible.

What you want if you want deep granular stuff is Reaktor if you want a vst. If you want to go even deeper then something like max msp or puredata or csound will give you even greater flexibility.

Also check out all the soundhack plugins there are some fun granular tools there. You can also search old freeware. I still use KTGranulator all the time and there were quite a few other old school freeware realtime granular effects. Dblue time stretch is a standalone triggerable granular buffer similar to the one in turnado and exactly like the one in dblue Glitch but a little wilder sounding than turnado to me. It doesn't have a gui though. Buffer synth was another great old granular buffer thing that was tons of fun. I'm not sure how many of these old guys are available or have been updated to 64 but or anything but I'm sure the old ones are still around somewhere other than my hard drive.

To do reverse grains with the melda granulator, set the transformation parameter to 1.

I'm pretty sure this will be possible with the upcoming MXXX, though when that'll be available is anybody's gues...

EDIT: until then a somewhat convoluted workaround is using several parallell instances where each process one band only and the other bands are muted, then add whatever other FX you want individually to each of those instances.

Does Crusher X do real time FX processing of the audio stream or is it synthesis ?

It's real time FX processing.

Thanks, tried it, works well, will need to read the manual !

Besides the real time processing, crusherX can also load wavs and you can play them on your keyboard. In that case use it as a Midi controlled plug-in, several modes are available inside crusherX. It certainly is the most powerful granulator out there.
