If the cheaper models of Grado's be just as good as the Sennheiser HD650, maybe I should then go with the Grado RS325, it's a lot cheaper, just 295 dolars, so that would be about 400 euros overhere.
Btw what's the difference between a headphone and a normal amp?

You can believe what you like but Grados are a highly coloured boutique brand designed to sound like a typical American domestic loudspeaker. However, the high pricetag seems a bit steep given the superior performance by the Sennheiser HD650 and beyerdynamic DT880
Monitor quality headphones they aint.

Have to disagree with you there, nufflink...ou can believe what you like but Grados are a highly coloured boutique brand designed to sound like a typical American domestic loudspeaker.

Having owned a set of Sennheiser HD600 and RS225, I have to say they are both fine headphones.
The Sennhesier's seem to be a bit less colored in the upper-mids, but it takes a crap-load of juice to run them. Better make sure your headphone amp is up to the task or you'll waste your money.
The Grados have a very open high-end, but I find them to be a bit pinched in the upper-mids. On the plus side, they run fine on most amps.
That said, I don't believe that any phones (at least none I've ever tried) are truly "studio monitor" quality. It's all a trade-off, in my experience.
Though I hear Sennheiser makes a $10,000 headphone system....

Mick,
You're right. Nobody should have to monitor on headphones. Unfortunately it's a fact of life for those of us without dedicated studios. Given that, using a pair of headphones with a frequency response specifically tailored to sound impressive is a bad idea.

Hey nufflink,
I'm one of those guys, too, I am afraid.
For the last few years I've had to live in a place where I can hear people sneeze in the hallway, so I was not copping a "pro" attitude.
I ran a studio back in Buffalo, NY for about 5 years, and I remember how my Genelecs sound in my sleep.
My only point was that those of us using headphones have to recognize that even the best phones will only get you so far...Somthing I know e both can agree on.
Oh, it sucks to be working poor!
