Changing the priority in the task manager?

When pressing ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager i can right-click on any task to change the priority. I´ve never messed around with this before so i´m a bit scared that i will mess up the computer.
When i right click on my host/sequencer task, the priority is set to "normal", but it has 3 higher settings "higher then normal" - "high" - "realtime".
Now if i change it to "realtime" will i see any major difference in performance in my host? Or will it just make the computer unstable, or worse?
Or is that stuff only usable if i have lots of tasks running in the background and i need to assign more CPU time to my host?

If you're going to do the priorities set up, it's best only to have the most essential programs running as high/realtime priority (virus scanner, firewall etc). I wouldn't put your sequencer as high priority unless for some reason it's essential to run it all the time, otherwise it's just a pain in the ass - realtime priority programs will automatically get system resources before everything else, then high and so on, so if you're using something that uses a lot of system resources (like your sequencer) it can drain resources from other "lower priority" programs and potentially reduce your computer's ability to multitask (read: it has the potential to lag to all hell).
Hope that helps.

It's sure quite safe to set the priority to high. I would even recommend it. Cubase/Nuendo start with high priority by default. This may help to eliminate some clicks, though hardly increases overall performance.
But setting the priority to realtime may lead to a situation when your host occupies 100% of the CPU and locks the system: it will play fine, but will not let any application do anything, sometimes even blocking the mouse! So the only whing you will have to do is power off

IF you like to reboot, set it to real time...
I've waited 20 minutes for a task to at least allow me to cntl-alt-del... it never came back. Play around if you want, but I kinda doubt it'll help you with anything specific.

Thanks everyone, and i'll check out the link above.
I guess i wont go as high as realtime then, the last thing i want is an unstable computer when working.
The reason i ask is 'couse sometimes the host can be really sluggish after i've done something else with computer, surfing the net, working with another program etc. But i'm guessing the RAM may have something to do with that also. Anyway, to get the best performanve i also have to reboot as it is now.
