As we're already on with the critics, tbh, i've been thinking the same when i read that Hive is going to have 3 switchable sound engines. Seems already a bit too much in the geek department considering the target audience and the simplicity approach. At least i'm wondering who'd really make use of it. In the worst case, people could be puzzled which engine sounds the best now, especially when the differences are "subtle".
The synth engine switch replaces more than a dozen parameters that would, by them selves, be seen as "esoteric" at best. We concentrated them into three complementary flavours that do make an audible difference, instead of adding 30 more drop downs that leave people scratching their heads.

We also got the number of parameters down to about, hmm, two thirds (?) of similar synths, without sacrificing flexibility. While we dropped rather unimportant parameters, we also added new ones that let Hive go far beyond other offerings. So, despite a muchly reduced parameter set we managed to put more features onto the table.

Therefore, I'll stand behind "Less is More" :clown:
Alright, Urs, thanks for explaining. That's fair enough of course. Still not makes perfect sense to me, as most probably, you will have the switch on one setting which sounds best to you anyway, especially when making sounds which fit in a certain category, but i guess it wouldn't be a u-he synth without a bit of geekery. :D

Btw, what's these sound examples everyone's talking about? I guess i missed these... Edit: Got it.

Look Urs, I'm sorry that my original comment caused you offence. That really wasn't my intention. I had a strong negative reaction to the GUI, as I generally do with any user interface that exhibits a layer of unnecessary conceptual whimsy. Thinking through what it is that I so dislike about this kind of thing, I boiled it down to a feeling of being patronised.

Believe it or not, I chose my words carefully to precisely and efficiently communicate my reaction and the reason behind it.

I'm rather at a loss as to how I could have better, that is, without causing offence, conveyed that opinion.

I like the GUI tbh. Opinions schmopinions. :hihi: It's always a question whether it handles as good as it looks though. There are GUI's i judged as good on pictures, but they didn't really handle well when really messing with them. I like that it's all laid out on one page though, that's always a big plus for me. Maybe there could be a bit more contrast, i don't know.

Serum is not your taste. That's fine. But it is just that, not YOURRRR taste..........

Actually as someone who owns most of what is out there, I will say that for me the two best sounding software synths I have ever heard and owned are Diva and Serum...... Very very different sounds. Just my taste.

It is almost like you expect your taste to be the definitive taste and Urs/U-he must comply if they know whats good for them.

rsp
Yeah this martingifford guy is quite annoying with his agenda... Serum sounds excellent, so do all u-he offerings. Use what you like most. Don't expect that everything will do what you want and sound like what you have conjured in your mind. Comparing Hive to Sylenth to Serum to whatever else just doesn't make any sense. Use it for what it is.

And what it is, is a bloody excellent sounding synth that is very tweakable and simple!

As already noted, the old saying rings true here, you can't please everyone...

But if your schmopinion isn't just a gushing endorsement, best keep it to yourself.

I see that now. But for me as a non-native English speaker, such nuances can easily get lost.

The UI may not be your taste, and a large part of posting this screenshot was to test the waters for something that is very different from what we usually do. We knew it would be polarizing. Thankfully no-one has put it on one level with UIs that I find badly executed (those fake perspective knobs, flares and highlights...). Therefore I think we're on a good way, but we clearly have to improve the usage of space.

Other than that the workflow is the easiest/quickest we've ever made, and it's IMHO much better than the other synth (even though something very importnat is still missing… gotta code that next week).

As long as the taste debate is about an exchangable background graphic and a colour scheme, I see no problem that can't be solved.

We still hope to go public before x-mas. It's a tough call and I should quit the browser if I wanted to get there

i really enjoy the GUI, very inspiring to me. But i generally like hexagons, so might be a subjective thing as with every ones tastes..

Technically, I can't fault it - the execution is spot on.

My reaction was wholly down to subjective taste. I'm just not a fan of decoration for decoration's sake.

It is better than the other synth - I'll give you that.

Chord memory isn't part of the keyboard design, but it's on our todo list. Not sure if we'll make it until initial release though.

That's right... get the coffee on the go & the whip cracking, it's no good exchanging pleasantries on here :tu:

OMG my parallax is all outta whack now.
You need to limit that rez, bro.

I noticed if I double-click a key it will stay on, ...that's cool and even though that's something else, I immediately though of chord memory. :D
