Is social media profile really necessary for a music act?

I have no commercial interests, I just do music for fun and hopefully will score short films or something down the line (again, not for money). I played around google+ today, had its annoyances but it let's you build an unbloated profile. Then I remembered that google+ is pretty dead.
I'm not sure about having a facebook profile. I guess I could but I mildly dislike facebook.
I have a soundcloud and wordpress (a minimalist diary of my progress), plan to release mainly through bandcamp.
The social media thing is mainly for connecting with other musicians, collaborators, people who like my music (friends and strangers). So, how do you approach this? Do you feel it's a must to have a social media profile (in facebook, google+, etc.) or are the other places like soundcloud and bandcamp sufficient for you to stay connected to people who care about your work as a musician? Just want to hear your opinion.
Thanks!

Facebook. I have a good time on it, if you're not going to have a good time on it, why do it?
Music as a social type of activity benefits from facebook. I don't do google+ so much, it's kind of dead air, unless you're really well known.
People that knew of me from halcyon daze or even the radio can haz me on the book of face. I get a lot more interest on the Facebook than I do here at music cafe.
It _is_ how I stay connected to people. But I'm no longer in the same naborhood as my people and I'm a bit of a shut-in now anyway.

facebook can be good, definitely worth a try, -For actual plays of music I find reddit better than anything else, soundcloud is also very good. I've never found bandcamp that useful

Interesting opinions. I noticed that bandcamp has a fan account and I guess you can sign up for the acts you want to follow, so it has a sort of social network function built in? Soundcloud definitely has been great for connecting with other musicians but I don't know if listeners sign up for soundcloud accounts as much. Most people I encountered there have been musicians.
I talked to a friend about facebook and his opinion was different. He says that they "skewed their algorithm to favor people who pay for advertising" and that the timeline is arranged to show popular posts (commented on/liked by many) so it's easier to miss less popular stuff. So, I'm conflicted about it.
Then there are blogs. I use a wordpress but that's mainly my own diary of my progress (e.g., "Today I recorded... my setup was ...") so that I don't forget some details of what I did. It seems more difficult to develop a community on wordpress vs. soundcloud.
I guess I will just release music on soundcloud/bandcamp and see what happens. I have a feeling anything would be extra and not really necessary for a musician who is not trying to create hype or make money.

I used to be quite known DJ (guestmixes, free promos, fangirls etc), but I missed the rise of social media. Now no one knows my name.
No matter how good you are, it doesn't mean anything if people never heard your music. Unless you do some local performances often, you will need social media to get audience.

FB does do that and if you want to maximize your usage of it that has to be acknowledged. But at the same time, how proactive would your listeners be? FB actually gives the opportunity to rate posts from your own feed as to the desirability of it. I'm using AdBlockPlus additionally. So my 'feed' is not ruled by people that are buying advertising to any extent I'm aware of. I follow some things [eg., "Jimi Hendrix"] which are to an extent a front for product and still I don't have the sense I'm ruled by that 'algorithm', but I've been somewhat pro-active about it. And I'm not really trying to push myself through it, there are the usual suspects that will see what I posted as to my own music, or what ever I'm into at the moment.rpm wrote: I talked to a friend about facebook and his opinion was different. I abandoned having a 'band or musician page' on it as redundant to a personal profile and I'm frankly bored by that and would rather relate to someone as a person. I'm friends with or follow or mutually friends with a 'friend' of known musicians that I admired since forever, and my interaction with them is engaging with political topics or something real. So one may be after something else than I am, I have not a huge interest in this 'follow this act' which is more youtube for me. I think FB would be a real good way to keep 'fans' apprised of live itenaries, though. If I was going to want to sell t-shirts I would I think do bandcamp and push it on FB.
As to 'timeline is arranged to show popular posts', yes it is. The more comments the more it's bumped. With no comments, it's buried. Sometimes things seem to be prioritized with a result that I just don't get. It used to be more annoying several months back, but since then I have participated in a couple surveys. It also prioritizes new friends heavily for a period now. But if FB is not showing you something you want to see, just go to that page. It's easy to forget what you're connected to, though.

Facebook is great for fans. The keyboard player in an act I follow once posted on stage video of the live crowd taken with a camera phone. Pretty cool!
You have no commercial interests but do you have an interest in communicating with you listeners? I was following Paul Hardcastle for a while and he genuinely seems to love his fans.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I still like Youtube the most. Odd that Google makes one of the best and one of the worst networks

Actually, I like google+ for its simpler look (but administering your account is not so efficient). Youtube is nice but I have to have visual content in addition to audio and I have no means or intention of doing that (I don't want to just put a static picture and release my song as a youtube vid).
I created a tsu.co account. Looks decent, maybe it could work. Also learned of gigmor.com but don't intend to create an account with that one.

I started out not wanting a static still for a video, but once I found out how to maximize the audio quality I started making still videos for youtube.
You can get it to output a 192kbps stream, which is significantly better than the 128kbps of SoundCloud. I never fully embraced SoundCloud myself. A recent thing I did was affected more by their compression than it had tended to be and I'm not interested in mastering for that, which is guesswork for me anyway.
But SC is social media in that you get out of it what you put in, if you're very social it comes back to you. The teeny tiny comments line which encourages 'this is awesome!' basically isn't my cuppa though.
