Whenever I select ( give focus) to a phrase, it immediately begins to play. How can I turn this behavior off, so that a selection of a phrase does not automatically then begin to play the selected phrase.

That is right, Atonal, you need to turn off "Preview Phrase For Selection".
You can turn off all phrase previews if not needed.
