BTW, another "contender" is Mutools Mulab DAW. There's a free limited version too. It has a similar rack structure to Chainer, and in fact better plugin organization than Chainer's long endless list (if you have lots of plugins). But I don't remember if the MUX plugin version has the plugin rack that the DAW has. This one's cross-platform too. But still not as good as Chainer.
Something like Chainer but 64 bits ?

<sigh> People just don't seem to get the convenience of Chainer's quick loading and access. All these wire-up hosts are such a PITA when all you want to do is load plugins in a rack and get to play them as fast as possible. That's why Cantabile has an edge over the lot of them.

Unfortunately, I believe he stated that he would never update it past the last version. I can't understand why he is so reluctant, but it's his plugin and he can do what he wants with it. However, those of us who bought it are left out in the cold. I wish he would at least sell it to another dev, so that it can continue to be developed and updated. I, and I'm sure many others would be willing to pay a modest fee for an update.
And the beat goes on...

I have to say that BlueCat's PatchWork is the closest thing yet especially now that it's a standalone AND a plugin. The only things it doesn't do (yet?) is catalog/assemble and test its own VST list (which can be assembled manually using shortcuts... not very practical when you have lots of plugins... and no testing means never knowing when it'll break) and offer MIDI input selection in standalone mode. It also lacks some of Chainer's advanced features (morphing/random preset management, multi-sample recording, built in recording) but overall it's really not bad at all considering it's not only 32 and 64-bit compatible but also cross-platform. Moving plugins from slot to slot isn't as elegant either: you cut and paste, while with Chainer you could just grab and move. The more you look at it, it's still pretty amazing how much clever thinking went into Chainer all those years ago; I think I'll always have a beef with Mr. P for not following up his little marvel with an updated sequel...

I actually just gave up on my forever go to "Console" (console.jp). It worked great but is 32-bit only and has been abandonware for quite a few years. So... after much looking around I ended up buying MUX from mutools a few days ago which so far is seeming to be a good replacement. Works as a vst and I wrap it in savihost to use it standalone as well (which also seems to be working well so far). Both Console and MUX provide more flexible routing than chainer did if I remember but beyond that the concept is pretty similar. A close second for me was FL Mini-host but it hasn't really stabilized for me on my system and while it's great it's free it also seems to be at the bottom of IL's priority queue (for obvious reasons). So... there's two more cents added to the thread.

Works as standalone and VST or AU host on Windows and OSX.
32 Bit and 64 Bit versions.
Multi-input/multi-out (MIDI & audio) support.
FREE.
Still beta?
We will get back to it tho.

The only limitation still there in Patchwork is that is does not support non-gui plugins. I reported this in march, but still not fixed in 1.5 I think it was I had.glokraw wrote:Another vote for Bluecat Patchwork. Simple and elegant.
The free set of midi plugins from Insert Piz Here is usable for many things, and you cannot use it in Patchwork. To mention something.
So wanting to run a number of midi plugins together with some synths in one patch - you cannot do that if any guiless plugins.
So finding a simple generic Host of some sort, and do Metaplugin is even more flexible. And it loads VST3 as well if you might need that. And it builds a menu of recently used plugins from disk, so no need to browse more than once for the same plugin. And working in Metaplugin with the graphical interface is a breeze.
www.ddmf.eu is the place to look.
