I am excited. Any opinions on the Korg DW8000? Any links? And how the hell do I dump and load sysex stuff? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :D

Still got mine that I bought new back in 1986...

You can record the data dumps as standard midi files or .syx if your host supports sysex. Or you could also record the data as audio.

Check this sitefor a patch-editor-librarian that will make it easier for you to manage the sounds.

Here's another good resource

We still have a DW8000 that we sample from time to time. Its unison is truly awesome.

I've still got mine too, though it's currently sitting unused in the corner. I used it mostly as a MIDI controller and am using a Yamaha S08 at present. Anthony Ruggeri's patch editor/librarian is ancient (I think he wrote it for Windows 3.1) but it still works under XP. The DW makes some great sounds - reasonable organ, synth strings, electric piano and such, but it really excels in weird space noises and big fat FM sounds. Built-in digital delay and arpeggiator... A bit noisy, but that's part of the charm.

Thanks for the links and opinions. This should be a hellufalatta fun. It's my first hardware synth, and the midi out in fruity will finally have a use. Thanks again to all

I always thought it sounded great. My guilt is overwhelming as I scrape a thick layer of dust off the controls of my DW-8000...

KORG stil use the DWGS waveforms in a lot of their current synths - MS2000 and Triton for sure and probably others. So they must have been onto something way back then.

Uh oh, looks like my opinion is gonna be in the minority here...

I still have a DW6000. It was the first synth I ever got, back in I believe 1984. I consider it the WORST sounding synth ever built. The filter resonance is pathetic, the waveforms boring, and the sounds just generally seem not to sit well in a mix.

The DW8000 added some additional waveforms, a delay and an arpeggiator, but generally it is pretty much the same synth. A friend who had the module version, EX8000, said that it seems to have an enormous spike in the bass frequencies which makes it next to useless without major EQing.

Not to rain on your parade... I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of your new synth. But it took me years of acquiring other gear to fully appreciate just how terrible was the sound of the DW6000. I still have mine because it has developed a number of physical and operational flaws which would severly diminish its already miniscule resale value. :( It now sits in a dark and dusty corner of my closet.

Love that sig! Wish I'd said it.

Yeah, I was playing with an MS2000B in Hong Kong a few months ago and one of the oscillators has a couple of DWGS waveforms.

I can confirm this. I also have an MS2000R, and some of the waveforms are DWGS. This seems like more of a marketing move than anything else... I mean, they're just some digital waveforms which tried to approximate the spectral characteristics of brass, strings, etc. Truly not a big deal at all. At least I'm happy to report that the MS2000 sounds great, despite the inclusion of these waves!

Still have mine. Plug it into a good hardware reverb and you can be in space & ambient heaven! Will make 80% of all vintage sounds of all the analog synths which came before it if you learn how to program it properly. The bass can muddy a mix so EQ it properly.
I'm not sure it would be good for trance because of that but the arp is still way cool. Read the reviews on SonicState for it... there was a fella a few months ago who wrote an app to control the DW arp with a Evolution UC16 controller!!

I love old school space music and this thing excels in that department.

Best... Scott
