I know this has probably been done to death but can anyone tell me which is best for DAW - XP Pro or XP Home? I'm finally taking the plunge.

I'm currently running Win2k on a P3 800e with 512M RAM. I'm on a peer-to-peer network for through a Linksys router for broadband internet.

I have two hard drives in removable caddies. Is this an issue with reauthorisations of XP when swapping hard drives this way?

Any advice would be grateful.

P3 800e? If thats a 800mhz processor then home will do....
But I must tell you when you strip away all the parts of home or pro you dont want to use it basically is like win 2000....
But if you must upgrade then home will do...
XP pro is for dual processors so unless you need hyperthreading or dual support then get home.

I dont know much about your processor tho..
In fact you might want to skip the OS for now and think about a Mobo and processor upgrade instead if the one youre useing is only 800mhz

I plan to go to XP because of the increased MIDI in/Out ports (32 in XP against 12 in W2k). I have a large collection of hardware synths in my studio that I still use.

Yes I will be upgrading my Mobo and processor to a ASUS P4C800 and P4 2.8G but that won't be until later this year.

Home then.
I dont see any advantage to going xpPro.
I think if you change processers you have to buy a new lic for XP.
I might be wrong about that but Im sure that you will...so that might be something else to think about if youre considering a processor upgrade later this year.
I might be wrong but I remember reading that somewhere....maybe MS has a way around it or something but you better look into it.

Nope,you won't need a new license if you have most of the same hardware.You might have to call them and explain that you did a mobo/processor update.

XP home. Xp Pro is good for networking. That's pretty much the only diff as far as I know.

Nah, it's only for linking many pc's. Home use will let you do all that stuff. And be careful with peer to peer. They're watching this closely. should work absolutely fine. If you find you need the other stuff, I'm sure you could upgrade, but I do everything, and so does everyone else I know, through xp home. Pro, to me, is useless.

Get yourself a router (stay away from WLAN, the bandwidth is still quite low even using the newest standards). I got a D-Link router with 7 ports and a print server option for 65,- euro.

I have 4 computers on it, win 2000, 2 x XP Home and the server runs on Win 98, cause it's old, works fine once it is set up. Only problem is copying data from the win 98 to the others it doesn't work, so I have to push data onto it.

And if yanyone visits me with a laptop, they can just hook up and have access to my data (if I want) and the internet.

I'm actually hooked up to a Linksys 4-port Firewall router so I guess everything should be fine with using XP Home. I'll very likely get XPlite and disable IE and Outlook and opt for Firefox instead for surfing the net.

I hope you don't mind me asking a question here relayer,,instead of making a new post..
I heard Pro has newer drivers than Home that could make it more stable,,is that true?,,also I like GPedit in pro to really streamline the os.GPedit doesn't come up in Home...but I've been told theres a way to get GPedit to work in the Home version...anybody aware of that?

You're asking an XP dummy here. I've just started investigating XP for myself. I believe that XP Pro has more functionality than Home but I'm not sure what they are, apart from how File Sharing is managed in both.

Can anyone enlighten us?
