Why would I want a scope? Why wouldn't I want a scope?

I think visual representations of all sorts are both extremely useful, and interesting. A scope where you could choose location in the signal chain (after Oscs/Ftrs/Amps/Efcts) would be awesomesauce.

a GUI is super important! Arturia plugins interest me (well since diva maybe not anymore) but theor guis are plain f**ked up and ridiculous i dont buy their stuff.... sorry. also i think GUIs should be user friendly and not like some guis "nerdy-like" or pragrammerwise right, cause as a musician i am no programmer ;D.

I've been able to live without a scope on most HW and SW synths for ages, so I could deal without it anyway. I rather trust my ears than my eyes when keying in sounds.

it's cool to have especially when creating/exploring patches...Erkenfresh wrote:Why would I want a scope? Why wouldn't I want a scope?

Diva's scope originally allowed you to look at modulation signals. I haven't used it since that feature was removed.
I have a theory that a visually arresting scope can trick a listener into thinking that what they're listening to is more interesting than it would otherwise be, or even enhance some timbrel element of a sound - a spikey visualisation would make something sound spikier, for example.

Well... The Hive GUI is easy to use and works well. The drag-n-drop modulation is fast and fun. It is definitely user friendlyCaine123 wrote:a GUI is super important! I'm excited that Hive doesn't need a scope. We've worked our asses off to make a scope happen in Hive, including a hexagonal alpha layer. But as it turns out, it might not be needed at all. I sensed a bit of disbelieve when I said "let's drop it".
Thing is, we can bring it back at any time. It's gorgeous. But as Hakey said, we should add more purpose to it than just floppy pixels that represent something you hear anyways. I don't remember why we took that out of Diva. Maybe because it wasn't thorough enough, or maybe there was a bug.

In no way is this a complaint or a plug to get a scope back in. However, I do think the scopes are a great learning tool for synthesis. Heck I have a real scope hooked up to my real modular all the time. It's not just about lookin' good or cool.Urs wrote:I'm excited that Hive doesn't need a scope. Definitely would like to see the scope make it back in. It's just great to be able to see what your doing and if you put a lot of work into it I bet it would be really good.
It creates a nice feeling of connection for me when I saw the scope in Bazille for example, reflecting all the ideas I am trying out.

the scope distracts you from the actual sound you are creating, for example in ACE i always look on the scope and forgot to listen to the sound with my full attention, it sound stupid, but exactly that would happen in Hive too, if there was a scope included too.
Hehe Urs how about an external Scope Plugin
so everybody could fire up the scope plugin to every u-he plugin and it wouldnt "polute the gui" (my opinion
When you want an easy learning tool, why not take a look at the daws basic stock synths? they are easy to use and for the visual purpose you could always use the free scope plugins from the web.
Lovely i cant sleep, what would i give now to play with HIVE ...
