There is an Erhu sf2 here (scroll down) which doesn't look like it came from E-MU.

The er-hu soundfont available on this webpage was developed by Ms Huang Huey Shean, under the supervision of Dr Minni Ang, as part of her final-year project on the B.Mus. program at the Music Department of Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Sorry cold, but that SF sounds terrible compared to the audio clip. I'd suggest using whatever viola sample you like that has no vibrato, then get REALLY good with your pitch bend wheel.

No need to apologise, I didn't create it. It sounds much smoother than a viola to me, but I don't know anything about these instruments.

Anthro: Thanks for that chinese intruments link. I'm a bit bored with the standard sitar, shamisen and koto samples. And i'm looking for some new unique sounds, seems to be quite a few interesting instruments on that page.

Is anyone sure about MiniErhu using the copyrighted Emu soundfonts? The MiniEru seems to be around 20-30mb, and the entire Emu soundfont download is only 27mb ?

Anyway i got a mp3 demo of the MiniErhu and it sounds really good. But If it really is the emu soundfont i'll buy it right now, it seems to have alot of interesting presets/sounds besides the different Erhu presets.

hi

embedding soundfonts into SE vsti's right now is a bad idea, notice that even though your plugin is 20MB
it actually uses 60MB of ram that is because SE tripple in RAM size when loading embedded SF2's

it's best to supply the sf2 seperate

or check out the yahoo groups for tips on how to include SF2 in your SE vsti's

I'll try to give a listen tonight or tomorrow and let you know whether it's the same erhu sample. Download is complete and I've burnt it to CD for safekeeping -- now it's time to listen to "The Capitol Steps Fourth of July Special." Long as the thunder and lightning die down after supper, I'll fire up VSampler, see what we have here, then report back to headquarters. *salute* (Might be tomorrow though.)

Listened to the MiniErhu and the E-mu samples from the "Old World Instruments" soundfont set. Nothing in Old World sounded much like the MiniErhu to me. MiniErhu has a much throatier, raspier, more hoarse tone. A more authentic sound. (Maybe the MiniErhu used old-fashioned silk strings instead of modern steel ones? Hm. Probably not, too clear and hard-edged for that.)

Some of the sounds in Old World Instruments strike me as pretty good, others not so great. There are so many that the overall package is a pretty good deal, though I wonder whether the Chinese Orchestra CD might have been a better choice... ah well, there's always another paycheck to deplete.

I love the sound of the Erhu (many names depending on size and country).

Hart of asia .. 3? has one sampled .. but it is not that good.

Perhaps Mr Garritan will have one in GPO one day, as an extra option.

The erhu (or yeewu in cantonese) is all over chinese cinema and Hong Kong and Taiwanese pop music.

Ok i downloaded MiniErhu, i have to play with some more though, i only tested it for a minute or so. It does sound authentic, but there does'nt seem to be enough articulations. But anyway it seems like a very useful "little" VST, so thanks for the link.

I listened to the demo in the link above and it seems there's only simple flat loops of the erhu. Unless it programmed to respond to mod-wheel changes or something. I'm looking for a more extensive set with loads of articulations etc sampled.

If I remember rightly there are three multilayed samplesets/soundfonts all ... But your right they might not provide all the expression and articulations you need as the CD does try to cover quite a few instruments. I have it at home, so I'll double check tonight.

I tend to avoid MiniErhu's bend up and down. To my ear, working the pitch bend wheel by hand sounds reasonably realistic.

Glooper, I'll keep the CD you linked to in mind. Can't have enough Asian instruments. :-)
