Arturia Storm - any users?

Audio Plugin Hosts and other audio software applications discussion

Hi

As I continue my quest to find an alternative (or maybe a partner) host, I came across this little dittie - I suppose it is similar to a few other 'All in' packages - I quite like it - especially as it could be Rewired into Logic.

Anyone using this - thoughts?

On the Arturia board there was a lot of conflict (!?) about this product.

I purchased Storm a long time ago... Mainly because it could be used on Mac and PC. But I never really did much with it because it was more of a pre-made loop/pattern sort of program... kind of like a beatbox machine... The new version which I beta tested is a little more live-entry friendly, and a little bit more like a classic sequencer, but it's still not in the league with say Fruity or Orion... I can see them giving up on it if there isn't better response to this new version, but who knows? The instruments are nothing special either, which might be worth the hassle if they were...

i've got Storm 2 but never use it.

although there are some interesting plugins in it, the 'sequencer' (can we really say that?) doesn't match my workflow at all.

it was also very cpu hungry, and it was only possible to use a limited number of synths/effects. the rewire implementation never really worked for me, as well as the vst plugin configuration.

with Storm 3, i believe that most of these issues have been addressed (how well? i don't know). but meanwhile i've purchased a couple of more powerful hosts, FL Studio being the icing on the cake. i don't need Storm anymore so to speak...

Another Storm 2 user..or un-user I'd say.

I cannot get inspired by this application whatsoever. I wanted to upgrade it to v3, but that one looks like a clunker as well.

Not to mention Arturia support is...questionable.

I remember one very frustrated poster here a few weeks ago commented on a dialouge with Arturia regarding a serious bug he ran into making his software useless.

The response was more or less, "Works fine on our machine, sounds like a personal problem, sorry.."

My kind of company...

wanna buy my license?

Hi

I will gladly accept v3 as a present - BUY your licence!

Or perhaps not - There is somebody else here - isn't there? - who asks for free donational full priced software - I don't want to step on anyones toes.

I was refering to a legitimate license transfer, I have no idea what you thought I was suggesting otherwise..

I'm seriously sorry for all the folks who ever purchased Storm.
I've been once reviewing it for a mag and simply couldn't believe HOW bad it was. Flaky design, extremely slow JAVA engine, no proper sequencer (as Wopelka said: could it even be called a sequencer?), no plugin support (at least back then), the thing itself running as a plugin was a complete waste of time.

The best thing I've been reading about Storm was a pretty much raving review in CM, just about 1 month after I wrote mine (so they were reviewing the same version). To paraphrase the author: "Well, after all it's a good thing to be limited to a few synths and FX" (back then you could use 4 synths and three FX if my memory serves me right).
Needles to say that after this I've never been reading the POS reviews in CM again. Seriously, in such cases thoughts of authors being either sponsored or completely retarded come to mind.

Personnally I do like using Storm2 very much.

it has a lot of shortcomings but it is still good, the bassline and drums sounds great, the effects too.

I rewire it with Cubase and others, or itself.

I think this software is the closest to working with harware I found. The most severe limitation to my liking is that I cannot change patterns by remote.

I program some patterns on drum machines, some on Arsenic as a bassline, use some fun fx, press record and five minutes later have a finished base track. All the stucture has been done live jamming with the mouse and hardware controlers. Very fast to setup and create your structure in a live manner, with some base patterns.

I found it not very fun to try to do more in it, but it serves me well.

Arturia is very good for synth engines, and I think that shows in Strom2 for some sytnhs and fx.

The sampling machine is bad, some synths are boring, but still...

it is 2 Storm together.

Chill out!

I was messing - but there is a person on the forum that SERIOUSLY asks for people to give him their unwanted software!

I hve never been able to rewire storm to anthing but itself. Bought 2 without fully trying re-wire functionality, but once I started to get into it I saw that it was not very elegant. My favorite synths on any "all in one" platform but way too many problems to consider using seriously with another host. Waiting for three so I don't have to install it on my new cpu.

Hi

I might have a couple of morsels for him!

Well observed - at least someone is reading my rambling cries of desperation!

:hihi:

My limited experiences with Storm did not inspire either. All criticisms above are applicable.

Better to get energyXT and gorge yourself on freebie VST and samples, soundfonts....

A kick-ass, flexible music studio, that costs less than pair of fancy knickers, is reality.

Amen.

I used to have a Storm2--it was a present from me wife :) Some modules are quite nice sounding there, I even made a few songs with it, but overall it is but a toy to produce some prefab dance tracks IMHO. It went to my 12 y old nephew finally, hopefully she's gonna make next Avrile Lavigne with the help of it  :P
