Don't need reliablity? You have your drive die in the middle of a project, and we'll talk.

The odds are higher that one of 2 drives will die, and you'll lose ALL your data. Doesn't sound like a good gamble to me, and the cards are stacked against you.

You might not mate. I value my work.

For anyone who may be tempted to give credence to this nonsense, any 7200rpm drive will give you upwards of 80 simultaneous audio tracks.

How much speed do you want? Maybe this misguided soul believes a RAID 0 system will make his 125bpm tracks run at 130bpm?

Dangerous junk to be posting on a technical forum.

I have 5 harddisks in this machine, serving as my net machine and file server. Allready thought about adding a sixth one... One disk is sitting in a HDD caddy so I can easily replace whenever I want. But the external USB cartridge I have as well (yes, USB, I only need it to transport or backup files, so speed is no issue, and even that isn't all that bad) is making the caddy obvious it seems.

Mainboard is a rather old Asus A7V 133Pro with onboard Promise controllers in some big tower chassis. No noise problems or whatsoever - I mean, it's not that all of the disks would be running actively at the same time.

I'm just throwing out some HDDs because with that external USB it makes no sense having them in the machine all the time (you just have too much space to put waste on it...).

Seriously, I don't think I'll backup on CD that much anymore. HDDs are dead cheap (just bought some 80GB Maxtor for a laughable 40 €), so I just like having a lot of them!

So if you want more than 2 drives it sounds like just using plain old IDE is better than RAID of any type? I don't understand why SATA can't work for more than 2 drives but thats what I've been told so I will either stick with 2 or go for standard EIDE. They will still be fast enough I suppose.

You can get one drive on one connector. The new Asus P5AD2 board supports 8 SATA drives, which is a bit higher than your 2 drives you were talking about. Now, if you only have 2 SATA connectors on your motherboard, then yes, that is true.

Also, my best suggestion to you to figure out new technology and to see if someone is bullshiting you is to go to a major motherboard manufacturer and read the manuals, seriously. They are always loaded with lots of great technical documentation in them, and explain what is what.
