Best and worst DAWs?

...why? If it was a hit, why would it need to be changed?

I mean, at least if it was me and I had a hit, I'd say screw it to any kind of company trying to rebrand me and change my art. Independent artists have it so much better these days what all with the internet ect ect. At least for me I hate being controlled so I can't fathom working with a studio unless I knew I would retain all rights and have final say.

Hit as in good, well written song, but not produced/engineered to record quality standard, or with timing errors, or a host of other imperfections that wouldn't make it on to cd. I don't have the ears for it either, which doesn't help

I wouldn't go for being controlled or the re branding either, but as a realist, I'm a songwriter and not a studio bunny, I'd take the sessions and expertise without blinking.

You hit the nail on the head here OutCider. My hearing is not that great to be able to control for all those imperfections either

Of course every one is trying to find the best DAW for him/her, but it is not an easy task!
For me personally, I think most of the DAWs have their strengths and weaknesses and it varies from person to person. Some strengths are weaknesses for others ..etc.
This is what I have experienced in my PC (i5 - 4 cores/8GB/Win 8.1), my laptop (i7/8GB/Win 8.1) and according to my way of making music:

Stability:
Absolute Best: Reason
Best: Reaper and Sonar
Worst: Live (it begins to crash many times a day now!)

CPU Usage:
Absolute Best: Reaper and Reason.
Best: Sonar
Worst: S1 and Cubase

Workflow (and how fast I can have my ideas recorded and modified):
Absolute Best: Live
Best: Reason then maybe (Cubase, Sonar and S1)
Worst: Reaper and FL Studio (for me because I feel it is even more difficult to understand than Reaper!)

Midi composing:
Absolute Best: Live and Cubase
Best: hmmmm! (Maybe FL Studio, but I haven't done any composition with it)
Average: Reason!
Worst: S1 and Sonar (Yes Cakewalk! You are behind! Move your asses little bit with Midi Bakers!)

Audio Mixing:
Absolute Best: Maybe Samplitude
Best: Sonar (with ProChannels), Cubase, and maybe S1
Worst: Fl Studio, Live

Notation:
Absolute Best: Notion
Best: Cubase (full or Pro)
Worst: Sonar! (but still better than some others that have none like S1!)

Overall, Reason and Sonar what mainly I'm using and I feel very good about them. So in spite of their weaknesses they are my best for now

Subjectivity ahoy!

Only Reaper (and to a lesser extent, Caustic...odd, but hey that's cool and lucky) was/is cpu efficient enough to run on my netbook. If I can attempt to make music on this HP 2000 then I'd say it's pretty awesome.

Everyone said Reaper was crazy and weird and hard to use/understand. I'm a dunce with this stuff so I steered clear for a long time. However, after watching a few vids on YouTube (because who wants to fall asleep reading manuals or even "quick starts"? No one.) I was up to speed enough to do the basics (and by basics I mean...for me anyway...all that I'd ever need to do).
It (and everything else) isn't as quick and fun and easy and awesome as energyXT and Caustic, and it's incredibly configurable...but I can never ever make it as quick and easy as energyXT especially, but it's more efficient and supported and more stable.

I'll be brutally honest though: I did more with Reason 2.5 about 10 years ago on my old late-first-gen iMac than I've ever done with anything else ever since.
Live I could never figure out anything. Couldn't even make it work. I just wanted to load a vst and bang out a single snippet of midi and it wasn't immediately apparent precisely how to do so (to me) and if something isn't immediately apparent sans manual then it's already wasted too much of my time.
More important though was that I could live a billion years not purchasing anything else and still never be able to afford something as bizarrely overpriced as Live.

The best DAW is the one that makes you curse the least, as there's not one that cures you of cursing.

i could easily see myself buying into reaper as a mixing tool, if i ever ditched logic for ableton. i would never go to reaper to compose though

i would also dismiss FL were it not for BT currently raving about it. free updates for life also sounds good to me. will wait till it hits mac proper, and take a look

have always loved the gui of PT, but when i owned it the whole package left me cold and uninspired

i could probably easily work in cubase again (haven't for many years), and would consider it again for cross-platform compatibility, were it not for the expense

ableton live is also pretty tempting at the moment, but only as a front-end, compositional, sound-design, loop production tool. again, am looking at cross-platform possibilities and, as i said, this could work in combo with reaper

Best: Reaper, scroll zooming is just so awesome, it makes everything else slow&weird
Worst: Probably Live, it's just weird (especially because channel tracks are on right, I mean, seriously), but nice one overall for the purpose

best for me is Sonar X3e. it is just fantastic for me w/ regards to stability & flow. i use Maschine as well, which is great for pattern making, but its arranger sucks.
