Hi, has anybody been down this road?

Does the USB connection sound that much better to drop 30 bucks?

The sound is better if you don't use the headphone out as it bypasses the onboard audio chip, but as long as you don't need the port for a midi in a cheaper alternative for an audio out might be something like this (I use this with my iPhone and a headphone amp):

another advantage is you can also use this to charge your iPad.

Does it have a lightning connector for newer units?

I would have thought so because they're primarily made for their range of iPhone/pad headphone amps (which are pretty good) but my iPad and phone are both using the older connector.

It doesn't, what I meant was the company probably makes some newer models with it.
