Music Creation software...?

Hey everyone. Years ago I played around with PC software for making music. I am looking to get back into it, and am wondering (since it looks like things have changed a LOT since then!) what people are recommending. I am looking for something which I can create full songs, save as MP3, but not sell. Basically, something which has a wide range of instruments, that I can make for my own use at home, or share with friends. I am not looking for software which will not let me save my work, or worse yet, not let me do anything of my own design. I have already tried a few programs which will only let me tinker with existing MP3s and such. I am looking for something which will let me make my own stuff. Thanks!
Also, in recommending something, tell me more about why it seems like a good fit. Instruments included, etc, would be great. Price is something else I am looking at (free or low cost is best!). Again, thank you!

Reaper + freebies

This could be your thing

None of free DAW's did it for me, best was Podium Free, but you will hit the one core wall pretty soon, other than that, it's nice DAW, maybe you dig it to pull a plug on it, who knows.

There is LMMS, too, maybe you can digest it

You could start here: http://www.kvraudio.com/plugin-ranks.php?m=3 Under the "Free" heading for hosts, I'd suggest starting with MuLab. It comes with some restrictions in the free version but with the built in MuX, you'll be able to spend a lot of time creating music without the restrictions really being what stops you.

LMMS, but this girl seems too chicken to talk. Mulab is probably more stable(and free).

Nice. I remember working with Fruity Loops back when it first came out, among others. I would love to find something that has strings (violin, cello, etc.), as well as bass beats, rock elements, etc. Not necessarily combining all of these into one creation, per sse, although that could be interesting...
Anywho, thank you!

The cheapest way to get (good) orchestral stuff - strings etc. - is Miroslav Philharmonik by IK Multimedia (if you don't have the money for more expensive libraries). There are sales where you can get it for $40 or even for $30 in the KVR Market Place sometimes...

You may also try this: http://www.magix.com/us/samplitude-music-studio/
I think MS has all you may need. Instruments, effects etc. Two versions, 49$ and 99$ (prices in euros in EU). But no upgrades for future versions, you must pay the full price for it.
You may also download old version of MS here (free): http://www.chip.de/downloads/Vollversio ... 40034.html
It seems there is only Deutch language, and only 32 bit, and different set of instruments... But you can try a full version without time limits.

Good Orchestral libraries are expensive, but you have many many options.
Komplete is a good starting point to get a lot of sounds.
Ableton Live Suite also comes with an orchestral library.

Basic version of Sonar is cheap and goes bundled with not bad instruments and effects. Wait for the sale.
Every issue of Computer Music magazine goes with a huge bundle of plugins (limited versions of commercial products, free for any use).

These are definitely giving me some great ideas. Trying to navigate that German site for the MS package. Took German in high school, but that was how many years ago? Never mind, best not to think about that one... LOL

Downloaded the German one. Ugh, trying to wrap my brain around the language again after 30 years... LOL I could be wrong, but I think it is a 7 day trial. Then again, my German is more than a little rusty. Any way to change the language...?
