Just wondering what the difference is between these two products other than 100 quid? I'm looking to sequence drums in real time. Other than than I am not going to have huge amounts going in with hardware, just another midi trigger (keyboard).

the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 being 70 quid makes it very tempting. Most of what I'm going to be doing is software based, Vti and so on...

Anyone? I really don't understand the benefit of the more expensive model and I've looked through the specs I'm just thinking I might be missing something.

Well, isn't the FW an external Firewire version?

And the 2496 one is a PCI card. (Which I have BTW, and can recommend.)

Unless you have a laptop, you could just as well buy the cheaper PCI card model. (And no need for a Firewire connection in your computer.)

On the otherhand, if you then decide you want a laptop later, you won't have to buy a new sound card (module, whatever). I'm in this boat myself, having bought a PCI Terratec DMX 6 Fire a few months ago, now I've decided I want a laptop (and will be selling the desktop machine) and will have to get rid of the PCI card...

The Audiophile is also the old (large) PCI card which will probaby be replaced with the new lower power (small) pci standard shortly...

Also, I think you can get your 2496 modified to be PCI express compatible for free (or price of shipping) if it isn't already. I think the new batch of cards is already compatible.

And I think new PCI express motherboards will have "normal" PCI slots for quite some time, just like we had ISA slots in PCI motherboards for years.
