Do not fight your G.A.S. on this one. Just buy it. Especially on sale. You'll be happy you did.

modulating the phase as a destination with arpstep as source gives interesting results.

I've been demoing this every now and then and decided to finally get it. I was working on a trancy song this holiday break and shuffling DUNE 2 and Spire demo for the sounds and always ended up preferring Spire. Spire just hits the spot for trance style sounds. I can get the same core sounds with DUNE 2, but the filters don't quite cut it as well as Spire's, they're just right for basses and percussive synth lines. DUNE 2 also has slightly brighter overall sound making it appear a bit thinner. DUNE 2 also doesn't have quite as lively oscs and overlapping notes with longish release times don't often sound very nice.

I also happen to love Spire's phaser, it sounds quite similar as I remember Virus sounds. I can't get that same sound out of any other phaser I've tried.

Only negative side is that everything I've made with Spire so far don't sound very original :). The sounds are good, but sort of generic.

man, if you produce Tarnce or EDM etc, and you DON'T own Spire, i would say you are missing out on one lovely synth.

Probably been asked in this thread, but I don't feel like trawling through 135 pages to see if the question was answered...

How's Rob Papen Predator stack up against Spire?

Predator has more oscillator waves but the feature list is not so much different. Effects are good, same with the filters but the unison implementation is not very good. There is no Unison spread parameter and unison never sounds good for me. Spire is the opposite for this and has a excellent unison implementation.
Predator has not this very clean sound like Spire, it sounds more... hmm.. Hifi ;) I use Predator more for pads, evolving sounds but not so much for plucks, leads and never for stacked sounds with unison.

Am I the only one that finds spire's filters a bit cold? You can warm them up with the drive, that helps a bit, but they always feel a bit harsh when you activate the resonance. Perhaps it's just me.

One thing that i noticed is that the resonance becomes a bit unpleasant at some point, as if, apart from the resonant peak, there was another sound. A bit weird. Also i feel that the loss of volume with resonance is a bit too much. I don't know if there's a technical aspect to it, but i never understood why that has to be on digital filters. Apart from that, i really like them, and don't find them particularly cold either, but i don't know if we mean the same "cold". :P I find Z3TA's filters pretty cold for example. But if you mean the perfecto or sorpio filters, there's some harshness with high resonance settings, that's true. But the acido filters are all very "good-natured" with resonance, and i really like the infecto filter.

I think the Scorpio filters sound the best/warmest. I'd rather have a bit of distortion or high end aliasing and a lively sound, than a surgical boring one. Cold/warm is a pretty crap way of defining sound, but we can't do much better when dealing with subjective aspects. The acid filters left me cold. Felt like there was no acid happening. I should try and put together a 303 riff anyway, just to see. My initial tests have been a bit limited, to just testing the filters with a supersaw and PWM waves.

Tbh, i haven't messed much with the scorpio filters, but now you say they sound the best to you, i'll give them a try. :) Just found the resonance to be a bit messy about them, but it could have been a wrong first impression. I mostly have been using the infecto filter, as it really clicked with me.

I tend to veer away from high resonance (apart from 303 patches, then I tend to go too far :hihi:), the Scorp filters can get a bit messy at high resonance, but I like the sound of low/medium resonance. YMMV :D
