will you please try this with beta14 that was uploaded a few minutes ago?
I tried to scan soundfonts at various folders without issues. To be honest I don't remember if there was a bug fix since beta13 that affects loading soundfonts. I was not able to make it crash with beta13 and beta14.
Which soundfonts are in your C:\Users\myuser\AppData\Roaming\RapidComposer\Soundfonts folder? How could I reproduce this crash? Does it crash if you choose an empty folder?
Hello Attila:

The crash still manifests itself in beta14. The only soundfonts I have in the Soundfonts folder are the ones you see in the screenshot from my previous reply. The good news is that I have further narrowed down the crashing scenario -- the circumstances are considerably more specific than I originally thought. Apparently, the crash appears to only happen right after you first run RC and then immediately select for scanning any folder beneath the User's home folder as presented by the shortcut location in the file browser. This suggests to me that some variable in the code is being referenced before it has been properly initialized.

The steps to reproduce the crash would be as follows:
1) Start RC.
2) Browse immediately to the Settings tab.
3) Browse immediately to the Soundfonts tab.
4) Press the "Scan Soundfonts..." button.
5) When the "Browse for Folder" file browser dialog appears, select any subfolder beneath the User home folder. It has to be a subfolder beneath this home folder in the browser in order for the crash to happen (as demonstrated in the following screenshot).

I noticed that the crash does not happen if you deviate from the steps in such a way that the uninitialized variable state gets properly initialized -- an example of such a deviation would be to instead navigate with the file browser to a subfolder beneath the C:\Users\Username home folder when selecting the folder to scan.

An esoteric crash scenario, I grant you, but a crash scenario nonetheless.

If you are still unable to reproduce the crash, I can zip-up my RapidComposer settings folder and PM the link to you.

Hi Attila!
Thank you for the new beta!
I would add the following to the new improvements ...
In browser phrases:
When I right click on the phrase, a window appears ... In this window
I would like to add:
1. Play preview phrases together with the composition
2. Play preview phrases with the selected scale in the master track
3. Choice of phrases up and down the list without closing the pop-up window

Do the same in all browsers ... (chords! Progressions! Phrases! Scales!)

Thank U!
Happy New Year to all!
Sincerely lulukom!

And in pop up window (In browser phrases) with a preview scale in absolute value does not work!
Works only when is chosen SCALE Degrees !

Thank you Attila -- well done!

I have also been submitting bug reports to the developers of other music prototyping software that I own; not all developers are as responsive as you. While on the topic of other music prototyping applications, I have to compliment you on RC's MIDI playback engine; it is on par with the MIDI playback engine of my industrial strength DAW. I recently switched to using Jack Audio Connection Kit Port Audio along with VB-Audio ASIO Bridge with all of my audio applications. The standalone MIDI playback in my other music prototyping software applications suffers from stuttering, but MIDI playback in standalone RC plays flawless! :tu:

An occasion, for those who could have missed it, to drive them to another post you've just made about Jack Audio Connection Kit, with a video:

It seems to be really an awesome tool!

Hi Tony,
I have to compliment you on RC's MIDI playback engine; it is on par with the MIDI playback engine of my industrial strength DAW.
Since the MIDI playback engine was totally rewritten in v2.8, its precision became +/- 400 usec according to my measurements. 400 usec was the biggest error, so most of the time the jitter is smaller than that.

Thanks for your post about Jack Audio Connection Kit - I made it a sticky.

I noticed that when I use the randomize feature (cool feature BTW) to generate a new chord progression, the phrases are not automatically adjusted after I close the Chord Suggestions window. As an example,

- start new composition
- chords are C F G C
- fill with Fingerpicking Generator
- left click the first chord (C)
- click the "display next chord" arrow three times to get four columns of chords suggested
- click the dice icon to randomize all chords
- close the chord suggestions window
- play your composition and note it still plays as C F G C
- if I then adjust any of the phrases it adjusts them all to the new chords

Hi John,

wow, I did not realize this bug! This is fixed in v2.8 which will be available tomorrow (Monday).
I am especially grateful for including the steps to reproduce it!

Thanks,
Attila

Attila,

I'm still using OS X 10.6.8 so I'm hoping 2.8 will work w/ that OS. I think you'd said you'll definitely keep it 10.6.8 compatible through the end of v 2. But will you do so w/ version 3? And when do you think v 3 will come out?

P.S. Happy New Year

Post

Hi David,

Happy New Year!
Yes, 10.6.8 will be supported in all v2.XX versions but this support will probably end with v3.0 (just like for windows XP which will surely happen). It is beginning to get problematic to test the program with all OS X versions. On the other hand I don't get any complaints or bug reports from 10.6.8 users so v3.0 may still support it... I cannot tell for sure at the moment. v3 will come out at the end of summer, until then one or two major updates will be released.

Thanks, Attila, that's good to know.

I am planning on upgrading from 10.6.8 at some point, but it'll take loads of time and a block of time I don't have now, so I'm waiting to find that needed time. One thing holding me back is a music program that won't run above OS 10.6.8 (an editor for a key piece of music hardware I use)....

I tried the panning feature on my tracks tonight and while it works well and is a delightful addition it does not seem to work as I would expect. For example, if I set panning to full left for my track and then load another song that has no panning setting, the loaded song track will be panned full left even though it will not show any panning being applied. Then if I add panning it shows dead center but still plays full left. I have to adjust the pan in order to get it to go back to center.

I would think this would be a setting that would be stored with the track with the song.

Post

Is this with MIDI tracks? A fix was added today to reset all controllers (including pan and volume) when the song starts to play. I hope this will work better in the next update or beta version.

Post

yes, this is with MIDI tracks. thanks Attila!
