Hi

Try the Bazzoid demo - it is a specialist bass vsti -and will give you the bass sounds for Garage (and other genres) - look in the quick instrument link - its in the top right corner - here at kvr!

Flipper.

If Garage is what i.e. The Streets does, then you have to produce loops with a high amount of swing. But i don't know if this works well on fast/speed garage...just try it.

Post

Shhhh. Don't say garage. You'll scare the neighbours. You have to call it urban now, due to the fact that no venue will touch a garage night as they have a nasty tendency of ending in gunfire.

Ok mate, speed garage has two very cliche bass sounds.

First is the whole jungle swell bass sound. This is very simple to make - use a single square wave, low pass filter, med res, set an envelope to slowly open the filter. If you want to make it more interesting, set the same envelope to modulation osc pulse width.

The second uses an organ sound. This is also very easy to make, simply take a jazzy organ preset from a keyboard or whatever (Native B4 is good). You can fatten (or should i say phatten :D ) this sound by placing a sine wav below it. FM7 can also do this sound very well.

Garage beats? Ok, speed garage developed from US garage so you'll find the sounds are generated in a very similar way. Basically they are sampled hits (usually from old groove records) combined with electronic drums (909 etc). If you cant be arsed making sounds, then you're in luck because they are abundent on sample CD's. House Essentials has hundreds of single hits that are perfect for this style. Use a 4/4 kick, clap on the 2nd and 4th, off beat hat, then some skippy swing percussion (either short snares, hats etc). UK garage goes for a tighter two step rhythm. For this style use similar sounds, but try pitching up your snare drum. Also heavy on the swing.

And thats pretty much it. Speed garage is a fairly old genre, and was never much of a mystery - there are no secret techniques you need to learn! Just keep it choppy and rhythmic and you'll be in business. Fill out a mix with some stabby keys and maybe some chopped up vocals.

Hope this helps you out my man!
