Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me with this as I am a little lost.

I currently have an Emu 1212m working perfectly nicely feeding my studio montiors (KRK Rokit 5's). What I want to do is add in my turntable to make it play through my studio monitors but also make it so that I can record the turntable as well, in addition I still want to be able to feed the output from my soundcard to the speakers when i am working on a track in my DAW.

I was thinking of getting a simple Behringer XENYX Q502USB and this is how i was thinking of hooking it up:

Attach the turntable to the RCA line in, use the USB output connected to my computer to record anything and the main mix output to listen to it?
Have the speaker output from the sound card going to one of the input channels, which would also come out of the main mix output?

Does that sound about right?

Any help would be appreciated.

You could run the mixers analog outs into the soundcards analog inputs and leave your monitors connected to the soundcard, or you could connect the soundcard to the tape/record in/out on the mixer, with your monitors connected to the mixer, using the tape monitor button to listen to your PC's output. If you connect the soundcard directly to a channel on the mixer you may create a feedback loop.

What about getting the breakout box for the 1212M? If its a Mk1 1212, you'll want an 1820 box, otherwise it'll be a 1616 box, but both have RIAA/phono inputs onboard, and will give you 8in/8out for more flexibility than a mixer into 2in/2out.

@thecontrolcentre: So with option one I would run the main mix output to my sound card inputs, as you say, leaving my monitors connected to the sound card, with this option i would need to have the computer on whenever i wanted to use the turntable, I think, that maybe a compromise I have to make. Would the recording quality be better this way or through the USB? If it is likely to be the same either way then maybe i should look at a mixer without the USB.

If i go for the second option would this not use up the tape/record in/out that i need to attach the turntable to?

Thanks for replying

I did look into this but I cannot seem to find just the breakout box available anywhere, I would need to buy the whole thing of someone and I don't need two soundcards (unless you know someone selling one of course  ).

I don't see any info about that mixer being suitable for connecting a turntable ... it doesn't seem to have an earth connection. You would probably be better off with a DJ mixer.

I would have it running through a small pre-amp, which has the earth connection on, which would then plug into the input on the mixer.

The soundcard does have a built in ADAT input, so maybe i should just go for one of those convertors you can buy and forget the mixer idea. This is really to get my turntable to play through my monitors and to be able to record it, so maybe this is the simpler solution.

Fair enough, Im not sure how difficult they are to get now. Ive just remembered that the 1212 should have the ADAT/SPDIF-supporting daughtercard, though, so that's definitely another option.

So you could plug the pre-amp straight into the soundcard.
I use a hi-fi amp, plugged into a mixer (from the tape out), then into my audio interface. I have a set of speakers connected to the hi-fi amp so I can listen without the pc if I want to.
The Behringer would work for you if you connect the computer as I suggested earlier, and run the pre-amp into a stereo channel on the mixer. If you connect the mixer via USB you would have to choose which soundcard to use from within your DAW.

Thanks for your help guys, I went for a small Analogue to digital convertor, which i will run straight into my soundcard for now and see how that works but you have given me some food for thought.
