Do you have aero turned on? I know there can be issues if it's not turned on.

2. The font is used everywhere, I believe. Track names, instrument names in the new rack, etc.

I see. It's just a bold sans serif typeface, about as standard as you can get. It's not a handwritten style or anything unusual. Unless there is some issue on your system with a font being substituted?

Other than offering access to your sample file directory in a docked window, what does Studio One's sample browser offer that MediaBay doesn't?

I much prefer the MediaBay browser for it's metadata, especially it's rating system. I now longer have to manually take note of great samples I find in my library but aren't suitable for the project i'm working on.

I'd like access to my directory from the docked version of MediaBay, but don't have a major issue accessing it with F5 when I need it. Just using the docked version with filters actually helps me find samples in my library I am less likely to stumble across, especially when I use the 'shuffle results' function.

Overall, MediaBay is far more feature rich than StudioOne's very basic browser.

In many ways it's an elephant to configure regarding everything.
But has some qualities still. I like Cubase star-system to mark your files.

I made a simple rating with stars to distinguish older project files from other daws - and I could list just these or just the ones used in Cubase and similar.

But trying to make my own branch to my own liking I failed - buggy as hell - or I just didn't get how to use it.

But how presets are listed right below each plugin in S1 is simple and effective. Drag the preset to empty space and a track with instrument and preset is loaded.

But being almost fanboi of Mixcraft nowadays I like their thinking. You are encouraged to save into the categories - so you are oriented towards use from start - rather than which plugin. You easily use existing categories which I always had problem finding how to do in other daws - usually reserved to daws shipped stuff. And just as easy to save as plugin chain in MC - and preset a couple of things like key range and transpose in the same process - no need for extra midi plugins for this most used stuff.

Cubase had this track presets thingy - but not thought through properly - and applying them you need to have the same type of tracks ready(you have these odd categories instrument track, Vst channels, midi tracks, audio tracks - they all need to be there the same way when applying a track preset).

If track preset really worked as one thought - any tracks missing would be created for you. This would be same as track templates in other daws - but no - not the Steinberg way of thinking - too simple. They hide track templates in Cubase Pro as track archives.

Cubase is really trapped in some old structure - and just padded with new stuff on top of the other things in there. Being a programmer forever I can understand the frustration of the people leaving Steinberg and creating Studio One - to rebuild and do it right from start. Cubase will probably never be properly reworked and fluently modern.

they can be pretested with keyboard/MIDI keyboards, u can even extract specific parts(inserts, channel strips settings etc.) from it, MIDI Loops is also nice (same as track presets just with events) feature

From C8 manual "Track presets are templates that can be applied to newly created or existing tracks of the same type."

If it really works as templates for tracks it's really good.

I have to try this with Elements 7 which I have.
Thought about going Artist to get Midi List Editor and track lanes, but also wanted to maybe go all the way to Pro to get track archives.

Being bookworm has it's limitations it seems. Thanks for input.

Tabs, drag&drop both ways, hierarchy, browse for plugins ... I use both Cubase and Studio One. Studio One wins 100-0, its browser is intuitive, simple to use and useful. Cubase's one is the typical over engineered concept that always keeps you battling to make it work right.

I use both as well, and prefer how Cubase works for many related things as MediaBay has more functionality I want than Studio One's browser, which has almost no meta data. There are often basically the same number of clicks to perform the same function in both, but they are just done in a different way, so there is often nothing between them simplicity wise. I guess it depends on how you work and what you need. If you need drag and drop more than you need meta data then it makes sense you would prefer Studio One's browser.

I find them both simple and intuitive to use, although I have problems with Studio One actually showing a few plugins. I've never managed to get it fixed so gave up trying to use them in S1.

As for the rest of Studio One, it's OK, but I much prefer Cubase in almost every way. So glad I moved.

It's just a shame the docked version doesn't have a folder hierarchy option though. Hopefully they will add it.

It's easy enough IMO to drag and drop from the main MediaBay window anyway. You can always set up a workspace to make that window pseudo docked as well.

I've not had any issue dragging and dropping audio files from MediaBay to instruments either. Geist included. Looking at the path on your screenshot I guess it doesn't like what you were trying to use. It's an odd looking path.

yepp one hand for the shortkeys and one for the mouse (at least the recording is nice only needs the numeric keypad and the MIDI keyboard) but IMO it's ideal DAW for trance (for me), it has the all the necessary tools: Chord pad/Tracks, "VST Expression" for multi-articulation sample libraries etc. Score view is much better in C8, just have to add MUX for the modular things, and Maschine as scratchpad ("Session view" is too nice in AL to live without it)
