BT are introducing a "usage allowance"

so it's time for a change. I'd welcome your views on an alternative UK broadband supplier.

check out eclipse with their Flex (bandwidth on demand) deal.

You can get a base 256Kb DSL connection and whack it up to 512Kb, or even 1Mb as required. You pay by the hour for the increased speed, but it's like 6p.

For typical usage it works out that a 1Mb DSL account comes to cheaper than a standard 512Mb.

My mate back home uses them and he is very happy with the service. I wish they'd do something like this here frankly. You UK people are getting spoilt.

I'd just like to say that I got BT broadband less than a week ago after moving home, and I've had a f**king nightmare experience with the wankers. They didn't tell me they they did 2 seperate servies (BT and BT Yahoo) and, unsurprisingly, signed me up to the underspecced one (which costs the same) when I ordered "1 meg broadband".

I called them to complain, and despite the fact that they claim they have absolutely nothing to do with each other (except the sales office dealing with both, how f**king convenient

), they were rather good at transferring me between the two ISP helpdesks and leaving me thoroughly confused when I was told I hadn't placed an order with them etc etc ad infinitum. Upon figuring out what was going on, they told me to call the number I'd just f**king rang and, essentially, hope that the myriad of well trained employees I was juggled between didn't transfer me to a 'completely unrelated' ISP by mistake. This took about 4 tries; literally. Completely unrelated? Come on! You wouldn't call Wannadoo up and be transferred to AOL by mistake. Oh yeah, they also saw fit to lie to me outright about the usage cap. f**king c**ts.

There's so much more than this, but that's quite enough for today.

They look pretty sweet Topaz. Even after you add the extra costs for unlimited bandwidth, they're still pretty cheap. I'll have a look at them when I get out of my BT contract. I had to leave NTL who I was quite happy with (they never complained about me blatantly flaunting the usage limit each and every day

) because this house isn't in a cabled street.

We're with Eclipse for connectivity and they've been no trouble (fixed 512M) but we've recommended Plusnet as well (they supply our webspace and back-up dialup). Take a look at places like ADSLguide, too.

I get a fair amount of downloads of my plugins
and they didn't ever moan.

it's nice to get 250mb ftp, and the really cool thing is if you need any kind of support (they even helped me with cgi shit) you can call anytime 24/7
at local rate.
