I've got a new 160gb hard drive and I'd like to know if XP Pro and Windows 2000 Pro can live happily together on the same machine.
Here's my dilemna: I need to copy quite a few audio files from another computer here at the house. I'm thinking that I can install XP Pro on the new hard drive then copy all the files from the older HD which is a 60gb running Windows 2K Pro. After I've copied all my audio files onto the new hard drive, I intend to pull it out of that machine and then install it in my music computer and do the same thing. Once all my files have been copied to the new hard drive, I intend to install XP Pro onto the older hard drive and then leave the 160gb in my music computer.
Is this feasible or am I setting myself up for a lot of headaches? Should I just begin the long and laborious process of backing everything up on CD's? What do you guys think? I really can't afford to screw up and lose these audio files.

why not just stick the 160 GB drive in the Win 2k machine, format it, partition it, and stick the files you need on the 2nd partition. Then take it out and put it in your new machine and install Win XP on the primary partition.

You see, both machines have WIN2K Pro installed on 'em. I built both of them. One is a P4 1.6ghz and the other is a P3 533mhz.
The older one is my "music" computer. As far as spec's go, I know that doesn't make any sense but if you're married or live with a woman then you can probably understand. I'll be building a new "beast" in a month or two.
So, your suggestion is almost exactly what I was thinking of doing. On the newer computer, can I just pop in the XP Pro installation CD and then format, partition and install XP Pro ONLY on the 160gb hard drive without creating any problems?

If you already have files on the 160 gb drive then no, you would need something like partition magic to create partitions without wiping the drive. If the drive is blank, just pop it in the other box, and format/partition it, then copy all of you audio data to the 2nd (or higher) partition. Then you can load XP on partition 1 with no issues.

The 160gb HD is totally blank and not formatted with no partitions created or any files on it. It's already installed in the newer computer and waiting for me to format, partition it and install an OS on it.
I'm assuming that based on what you've said, I should be able to pop in the XP Pro installation disc then format and create whatever partitions I want on the 160gb hard drive without creating any problems.
This would mean that I'd have XP Pro on the 160gb HD and W2K Pro on the 60gb HD in the same machine with no problems. Is that correct?

That should work fine, and after thinking about it more, your older machine may not properly read the 160 GB drive without a bios update, so thats the only hiccup I can forsee happening.
