Greetings from the bottom of the world.

I finally have a few songs under my belt, and want to put them somewhere so my many fans can download them

Does anyone have any opinions about the best places doing this? I don't have a CD I could sell, so its either free downloads, or the remote possibilty that someone might pay a buck for a song.

A couple of places that looked good but seemed not to work at all with a Mac were Sound Garden and Besonic, so they are out for me. Weed is a really interseting concept too, but PC only.

Artist Launch and Dmusic seem to work well, but there is no way to do payed downloads, and Artist Launch's home page is ugly!!!

Soundclick is ugly too, and people have to register to listen to Hi quality files (I think) which I think is a turn off.

Vitaminic is the only place that seemed to work OK, that had a combination of free or pay downloads, hi and lo fi. A lot of stuff from Italy on there!

Anyone have any thoughts on any of these sites?

Thanks!!!

This is one of those questions that seems to get asked at least once every week...

try www.iuma.com

Post

thanks, I did a couple of searchs using the names of some of the sites. but of course they're in a lot of peoples links to their own music. Couldn't find anything too specific.

I'd looked at iuma but it's artist info page doesn't explain much, some of the links that look like they might be promising are 'not found'.

iuma is free, there are no limits to the number of mp3s you can put up (look at vurts page) and you can deep link into your tracks.

what more could you want?

Post

yes, good points.

but I have been looking at their forums and they sure have a lot of dissatisfied customers. (if you can be called a customer using a free service that is)

So no-one else has any recommendations????

no great stories of finding fame and fortune????

Don't want to sound like I'm pushing these guys or anything, but the site's been down for about 8 months which is why they've had so many dissatisfied customers (I was one of them).

Advantages of Iuma - no limit to space or the amount of mp3's you put up. (most sites limit either your space or the number of tracks you can put up, or the size of track file. Iuma don't do any of these).
HiFi / LoFi streaming and mp3 download facilities on your page.
Can manipulate your page to a certain degree rather than having a standard corporate look to every page.
You can put pictures up as well tour information etc.
You can link to your tracks without the need for people to leave whichever site they're on.
You can arrange you tracks into 3 different album categories if you want.
Listeners don't need to be members in order to hear or download your tracks...

I don't think I've ever spent any time in the forum there.
Is that necessary to go there if you just want some (a lot) of space to put your tunes up?
In the time you've spent asking for alternatives, you could already have set up a page there and have your songs showing by now... For FREE. No strings attached, with linking facility.

Of course, it's entirely your choice... :D

Lotsa replies!! thanks.

Glassback, Your right about the amount of time spent, unfortunately, I'm a victim of my personality.

Thatss lots of good points about IUMA, I just found it hard to find out how it works from their artist link, and some of the compliants were recent.

Still it does sound good, and like you imply, what's there to lose?

Soundclick: somehow signing up to download a free MP3 annoys me, signing up you're happy to pay is OK, but for free stuff???

Mperia: now that looks pretty cool, I like the idea of it, it worked really well, the Flash previews are great, and there was some good music there too. Probably not a big chance of selling anything, but that's not really a biggie.
I didn't find it in 2 days of looking, I wonder how many others know about it?

SectionZ: Doesn't quite fit my style, as Electronic is only a bit of what I do

(thats the other hard thing to dcide, what genre am I? 'alternative electronic progressive folk pop rock?')

Here is what I think that is must important for music hosting sites:

1.It's should be free

2.There should be some kind of top list's, voted by users.

3.The site admins should join compilations from the best songs and sell it.(and give us the money, offcourse)

I really recommend getting your own domain name, so that you have TOTAL control over your own music. Personally, I use IX web hosting, http://www.ixwebhosting.com, I paid $75 for a year of hosting, with up to 5GB transfer per month. It's really not that hard to scrounge up $75 in a year. :)
