Windowing is still a mess on Windows 7. This may work for some folks, but I find it immensely distracting.

Well you are choosing to have it set up that way so it's not really Steinberg's fault. For example, on a similar layout I use I have the MixConsole span the the full width of the bottom area, as it quickly fills up. Surely you'd be better doing that than having to increase that MixConsole window all the time?

I also like it that you can see windows "behind" the application, as I often have notes I like to keep on display, or some other bits and pieces I don't want to be hidden every time I do something in Cubase.

It's only a mess if you make it a mess, as in fact it's flexible, which makes it easy to make a mess if you don't make good use of the space and/or Workspaces with your desired layouts.

I don't have it set up any specific way, and fully understand the concept. The problem (for me) is that there simply is no background. And as far as I know, that cannot be changed. Having to spread out the channel window so that I can have something like a background is hardly an ideal answer.

As a friend noted: "They are trying to make it work like a Mac or Linux. That must be distracting."

Indeed.

This version behaves unlike any other software on my PC.

Considering the colour of the mixer window background is just flat grey I'd call it an acceptable answer. What kind of background are you looking for?

Maybe though they can add an option to grey out the main Cubase window for those who don't like being able to see other applications/desktop as well? It would make it less flexible if it was always on, but fair enough to have the option for people who don't want to be able to see other applications or their desktop.

This. :tu:

And - please - put the minimize button back in the top right of the program. Like every other Windows program I have ever used. :)

Frustrating, as there is much I like about Cubase 8.

i give you my word, and i think many people would agree with me even if they don't want to say this, that, I WILL N-E-V-E-R- (EVER) till TIME IMMEMORIAL, buy any version of cubase and would die happy, and cover my dead self in ice cream and candy in celebration of my cubase free life that i lived happy that i never again had to deal with the wretched product that is steinberg cubase. i mean that with all my being and my heart. if i die, and my soul was buried with the latest version of cubase, my soul would forever walk this earth.
Wouldn't have said it in such an angry way, but well... Let's say I basically agree. I made the mistake to purchase C7 soon after its release : I never got it to work as expected. Result : a switch to Reaper after the last 7.0.x update. Just out of curiosity, I recently posted this : http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtop ... 92#p404292 in Steiny forum (which quickly went from the 'General' subforum to the 'Presales' one, by the way...). Still waiting for answers beside the only one I got, but I don't hold my breath : Guillermo, perhaps ?...

Seems that added problems have arised, since : the 'Aero' requirement, the menu bar behavior, font and text editing issues, metronome misbehaving, clunky 'Always on top' plug-in window status (only partially solved), MixConsole again (channel width unstability)...

What on earth are they doing ? :scared:
AMD R7 3700X/Asus Prime X470-Pro/32Gb/W10Pro(64)/RME Fireface UCX+ADA8200
Cubase Pro 10.5.20/EmulatorX3 and several other VSTis

I'd prefer having fullscreen gray (or whatever) to seeing the desktop. When I close a project, all that is left is the top bar (file, edit, etc.) and the transport and VST meters. Not only that, but if I try to open the hub from the dropdown (in this screen state), the dropdown will not come down, only Help and everything to the left of it. I had to create a keyboard shortcut to get the hub open. (Sometimes I like to quickly open a project that's not recent enough to be on "recent projects").
I'm on a 3 monitor setup, btw.

In 7.5, Cubase had a main (opaque) window that I stretched across three monitors. This put the file menu on the left monitor (not ideal, but workable). The timeline was a separate window which I stretched to cover the center monitor, and the mixconsole was a window that I stretched to cover the right monitor. This left the whole background space on the left monitor to place the extra transport bar, VST meter, and any instrument or effect UI that I opened. I still had unrestricted views of the timeline and the console.

Edit: make that unrestricted FULL SCREEN views of the timeline and console. Likewise, no distracting icons or desktop pictures showing through. Cubase was it's own little all-encompassing world.

Fair enough if that's your preference. I guess it's more like how it is on OSX now. Some people won't like that and will find it distracting, and others won't and/or find it useful.

That's strange you can't access the hub menu though. I can access the hub menu from that menu bar when no projects are open. I use it all the time as I usually close a project before opening another.

Render in place with Loopmash = instant crash.

Looks like that is about to be fixed by Air as I thought it should be! Loopmash, I have not seen that happen, but I then again, I use it very little.
