Is country music too formulaic?

The secret formula for success in 'New Country' was invented by Shania Twain's former Mutt. Find the formula of pop music that's at least 10 years old - hence Def Lepp. Use those tricks to sell more old dogs. And rusty pickups that won't start when your wife leaves you while spilling your last beer on the porch that fell down last winter when you lost your job at the Camel Corral when it was bought by some fereigners who looked like hipsters from Cuppertino.
Wish I could say I'm making this up...but looks what's hip in Country - Hick Hop - Country Rap. 30-40 years of HipHop and now it's safe to implement in the Country format. Yo Hound Dogg!

Well yeah, that's where the term "Nickelbacking" came from. Some guy decided that "Someday" and "How Remind Me" sounded too similar and laid them back to back.Gribs wrote: ...and Nickleback pretty much wrote, recorded, and released the same song over and over again
The scary thing is, we have 5 #1 songs and a top 20 song from the last three years which all sound a hell of a lot closer than those two nickelback songs.

Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

That chord progression usually annoys me whenever I spot it.farlukar wrote:

No.
Sometimes your dog dies AND your girl leaves you, and sometimes your girl just leaves you.
And sometimes you're drunk while your girl is leaving you and your pickup truck gets stolen.
Lots of different things like this happen, so no, not really formulaic.
[and, believe it or not, I actually like country music.]
Cheers

I spent some time in Kansas during the 80s. I thought it kind of odd how many rednecks seemed to like rap. If anything I am surprised "Hick-Hop" hadn't happened sooner.mandolarian wrote:Wish I could say I'm making this up...but looks what's hip in Country - Hick Hop - Country Rap. 30-40 years of HipHop and now it's safe to implement in the Country format. Isn't it time for the Schoenberg 12-tone method to invade Smashville?

Country music formula:
- Patriotism
- Beer
- Trucks
- Horses
- Heartbreak
- More Trucks
- Cheating spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend
- More Beer
- Some Pedal Steel Licks
That's all you need to write a big country hit.

Every now and then I listen to 95.9 The Ranch, and cannot listen to it more than a few hours, everything sounds pretty similar. But it's the same with EDM, I cannot listen to Club Hits more than a few hours...
I liked Big & Rich who were the first country musicians who introduced kind of a country rap...

Ten years ago I was in a classic rock band; during the breaks there was a dj, and holy moly, when they played Big&Rich 'Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy' that dance floor filled up quick.Tricky-Loops wrote:
