Fueled by over 25 years in the relentless pursuit of innovation, SONAR is re-inventing the modern recording studio.

SONAR is more than just a digital audio workstation - it's the most advanced music production experience available today. We've completely changed the way our software is developed by introducing a Membership program that offers continuous updates to the program including new features, improvements, fixes, content, and video tutorials that guide you along in the process. And thanks to the new Cakewalk Command Center, we've made the installation and update process a breeze so you can focus on what's truly important - making music.

I really don't like the idea of memberships for computer programs.

That said, I'm confused. So there's like no downloadable upgrade available at a discount for customer of the previous version (X3)?

Edit: I found this https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Versions and it's $149 upfront to upgrade and 12 month membership.

So one has to "subscribe" to get bugfixes now?

No thanks, I'm out.

They make it sound really good, which it could be. I've never done software membership before so it'd be new to me. There's no word on a release date though, it seems.

I really hope this is not the shape of things to come for all DAW's... paying $10 per month, or $100 per year for the smallest version of a DAW feels like a rip off. And $500 a year for the biggest version, i don't even want to comment. Jeez, i know the dev's want to live of something, but imagine you'd use Sonar Platinum for 5 years, you'd pay $2.500 for it. And it even says "STARTING AS LOW AS", which obviously means that that is the entry level price, whatever the more expsnive options are. Well, maybe i misunderstand something about this... i hope i do.

No mention of Alchemy 2. Pass.

Did you read everything about the membership plan? You can discontinue after 12 months and still use the software forever after. Works out that you would pay roughly the same as the outright cost. I quite like the idea of subs - good that they will be offering both options.

Ive already got X3 Producer, can the OP confirm whether I'd lose my existing ProChannel stuff if i dont get Platinum? Im not paying extra again over the 'Professional' tier just to -keep- the extra ProChannel and VST plugins I already paid for.

If that's the case and the main difference between Artist and Professional is ProChannel support, and all I'm left with is the 3 of them in Professional, then I'll do without, and Artist will do fine.

I see. So basically, you just won't get updates anymore if you quit the membership? Thought you'd lose the license then actually.

Edit: Alright, i get it now, after reading this: https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Membership Doesn't sound like a bad plan then really. Maybe apart from the fact that you won't get free support after your membership, even if you own the software license then..

Damn this update plans suck big time.

Can't believe they seem to make the same mistake as Avid.
I can see no information what happens, if you opt out of the membership after 12 months, and want to be a member again after some time.

Read the FAQ's under Membership - it's covered there.

SONAR goes WUP...

Post

So is this "X4" or "Sonar Pro" or is "Sonar 2015" the name?

Looks pretty nice. Dust off and tidy up the KVR Marketplace, daws will be a' selling. :hihi:

P.S. What happens if you pay by the month and stop paying before you reach... the full payment?

From the Cakewalk forum:

If you decide to go renew at a monthly basis you will need to pay for 12 months to own everything you are receiving as part of the new renewal. If you opt out, you'll revert back to the version you paid for before you renewed.
