The double negative was a typo. Since my native language is a latin one (portuguese) I "literally" wrote as I would say it in portuguese. Yes, I'm aware in english we negate the affirmative and confirm the negative

Regarding the "real OS", of course your iPad has an OS, it's just that's a crippled one. It's like Wordpad (or Writer, in Mac OS) compared to MS Word (or Pages). You can write a text in the simpler ones, but you can't get much further than that, while with the latter, you can fulfill pretty much what you want (WOW, I guess I came up with a good comparison ).

So, if Wordpad or Writer is enough for what you want/need, fine. But if you want more, you have no other solution than buy a "real" computer.

The life cycle also suggests Apple will introduce a new product to bump the sales into a new category. Probably merging iOS and OS X somehow.

Scott, tablets purchases in general may very well be in decline; I wasn't taking issue with that. I was taking issue with what I considered an assertion that anyone who likes iPads and iOS are fools with no logical reason for their preference, but with the one positive aspect being that they will soon wake up.

Personally I'd like to see both Surface and iPads continue to evolve.

I'm not sure. For this typical stuff (searching, reading some stuff in the web, mail, navigation, using some special apps like news, ordering service, transportation service...) I see that many people using smartphones.
With my own experience, I love my smartphone and use it very often but the tablet is collecting dust

Not at all a fan of tablets too here. If then rather a smartphone, or a hybrid between tablet and laptop, like the Surface Pro. Or rather both.

It will but you will still be limited to the basics, sampler channels, simple synths and FX. But this is a big step forward from just 2 years ago where performance was reduced to a slide-show.

In another 2 (when Intel makes the next 'Tick' sound) I think we will be at the point where a $400 Windows Tablet is capable enough for music production with existing (fully fledged) DAW software.

Intel has reported a loss in its mobile division for the last quarter. This has been attributed to how much money they are paying manufacturers to spec their product in tablets. They seem pretty determined to join the party - they must believe they have a shot with the Atom/Bay Trail line.

I have no idea what this thread is about. I got an iPad for Christmas and I'm digging it, but it's not replacing an actual laptop or desktop. It's its own thing. Maybe my wife should have bought me a Surface... but so far I'm having fun sketching and surfing the web with it and it's excellent for Facetime with distant relatives. I haven't had time to play with it's music capabilities but I have a feeling it'll be fun to control Omnisphere with. I'll explore that over the next few months.

My worry about a tablet that's trying to be a laptop/desktop replacement is that you'd have to make concessions in terms of design that would ultimately make it not as good at either. I think Apple was smart to design the iPad the way they did, though my wife was smart to also buy a case that had a built in keyboard (ClamCase Pro). Anyone who calls the OS crippled doesn't get it. It's like complaining that their car can't get up a flight of stairs.

Hey Pyloslax, @fmr is actually one of the doom-mongers and nothing short of hilarious himself:

It may not be right now, or next year, but the iPad will be gone in a few years, since people start to realize that, behind the fun, it really does not do nothing that can be compared to a real computer running a real OS.

Personally I have to believe it is an troll- or attention-thingy that drives them because I simply refuse to believe anybody unconsiously are willing to make such big fools of themselves. However, it may be denial from my part and the scaring truth could be that they actually believe their nonsense.

So far two years have passed since the beginning of this thread and the iPad is alive and kicking.

The OP and the thread title were over two years ago. Most of this thread's content has moved way past that.

The potential of the Surface Pro and similar portable devices for PC music apps is what interests me. I just tried out a recent Surface Pro with an RME Fireface USB interface - on a quick test it ran the current Reaper 5 beta without stutters at 256/44.1 without any tweaks whatsoever. Will try some more thorough tests next time I get a chance.

Yes, tablet sales are slowing. Know why? Most everyone that wants and can afford one has bought one (i want one but cannot afford one). It's a saturated market. It looked incredible when Apple hit on a product that captured:

1. People that don't like computers at all but like what an iPad can offer them. Some of these people are probably even former computer users who have grown fed up with computers.

2. People that only ever had a computer because of specific things an iPad actually does quite wonderfully (because an iPad-like product didn't previously exist and therefore they had no other option). These are people that need never own a traditional computer ever again. Most notably: Internet-only users.

Sales slow down when everyone's got one. Oh dear oh my, what shall we do, it's the end of tablets! Doom and whoa!

But everyone keeps citing figures and pundits' FUD because humans are a bunch of hooting and mimicking apes.

The real problem is the obsession with perpetual market growth. It is impossible. Only rank capitalism pursues perpetual growth (and cancer... and self-replicating life forms, but we see how the pursuit stops when the organism kills itself with overpopulation or by killing its host; rank capitalism seems to like ignoring that part, even embracing it as another goal they hide in the shadows when capitalizing on the death throes of a company that has grown too large to not fail).

I long for a time when companies plan a point at which they stabilize on maintenance of their matured product and market position, rather than constantly chasing more plus more plus more ad infinitum.

Public ownership is number one on my list of reasons American capitalism is rank. National politics is number two. The state of the copyright and patent office is number three.
