Is country music too formulaic?

I had a country band back in 1987. It is one of two things where I fronted for a few numbers, lead singer.
We had a range though, from very straight renditions of Hank Williams 'Lonesome Whistle Blow' to a ['progressive'] version of Wichita Lineman where the two-chord vamp of the outro became a whole thing (shut up 'n play yer guitar). We sold some T-shirts, we did. This was before there was any ironic country to be seen. The drummer's wife, Jill Olsen, formed Red Meat following this experiment. It was in part a kind of performance art.

I like working with tradition and known forms. Again, I don't think 'formulaic' is a guarantee of stupidity. However some things seem purely formal with a kind of lack of content.

Country music is NOT formulaic.

The lyrics just require:

Pickup Trucks
Lots of Drinking
Guns
Mom
Country Girl
Lots of Drinking
A certain type of republican politics
Lots of Drinking
--After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

-Aldous Huxley

Ronnie Milsap anyone?
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.
