No one knows. All camels that changed a light bulb in the past had to sign a NDA.

Only page 201? I thought you folks would be at page 350 by now. Clearly I need to stay away longer. Has anything new happened in 30 pages?

Anyway, this is my contribution to the process of thread page growth.

Win7 is minimum, right? Anyhoo... been a while since I've used that software and been on that forum... I see they're doing the "subscription software" scam now. And some "membership thing" in order to get bug updates? Wha? And how bout this for pricing:

$199 or $19.99/m

Huh? First of all, who "rents" software like a DAW for 1 month at a time? Anyone? Bueller? Second, doesn't $19.99 x 12 months = $239.88? Do I have that math right? What exactly is the incentive to pay $20/month? As a percentage of buying a license outright $20 is absurd.

I think the bean counters have gone berserk. Like paying for a subscription to use a freaking word processor. WHO DOES THAT??? You either need a word processor at your disposal, or you don't. It's like a shovel or a frying pan. You don't rent frying pans, you buy them and they sit in the cupboard until needed. It's not a like a steam cleaner or a backhoe. Imagine if everything you ever needed in the world could only be rented on an hourly or monthly basis? Doesn't make much sense, does it?

All these companies and their scam artist accountants CAN GO SCREW!!!! I stopped putting quarters in arcade machines when I was 12, and I'm not going to dig up that habit now... If I want to install that 15 year old working copy of Office 2000, or that 8 year old working copy of Office 2007, then I will do it. Here's an idea: you want me to upgrade so you can keep the money coming in? Give me a damn reason to upgrade, idiots. Produce a better product than the next guy. Produce a better version than the previous version. We're talking old school business tactics here... no need to try to scam me with some "payment plan" crap. When did everyone become a used car salesman? Is that what they teach in business school now? Selling Used Cars for Maximum Profit 101.

Let's say my copy of Office 2007 cost $400 (which I don't think it did, closer to $300 IIRC), divide by 8 years that's $50/year. $50. Not $67, not $70, not $100. And with every year I continue to use it the cost goes down. Upgrade to the latest and greatest? Not likely... there is no upgrade path, so relative to the benefit the cost is too high. Subscription? At $100/year (or whatever it is), the cost difference ($50 vs. $100, and growing) relative to features is still too much. Seriously, where do these bean counters come up with these numbers? Do they think we're all gullible and can't do basic math? Clearly, once your only option is to pay a subscription, they got you by the short and curlies. Hello, Adobe, I'm talking to you, you scam artists. I don't need some bean counter telling me that all of a sudden I can no longer edit my documents because I didn't pay the Troll the yearly fare to cross the bridge. SCREW THEM.

Sorry for the rant. Just thought this thread needed a little diversion. Spread the hate and angst around and all that...
You need to limit that rez, bro.

You have to renew at a yearly basis for the new guarenteed more frequent updates. You keep the software when you unsubscribe for a year minimum. You get the soft cheaper at one full price or pay like 20 bucks more if you make monthly plans. Such places usually come out with a new update yearly and the cost is usually the same and paying the monthly few but you don't have to wait a year in between for the Huge update. You get it in little segments as soon as they are finished with it. Sounds like a good idea actually for the most part 8)

I'd see the rental model working in a studio that has a client walk in with a session that needs X software. It can be rented for a small amount while the project is worked on rather than having to buy it full price.

Avid had rentals on plugins for ProTools.

It's not for me, but I can see how that might be good in a few cases.

Post

Oh yeah....renting is always sooooooo much better than buying. That's why clever musicians and drummers let their girlfriends sign the rental agreement on the flat/apartment/cardboard box.

Oh and nice work everyone to get this caravan to 201 - even if you had to cheat to do it. It feels like a community that pulled together in a heroic effort of sarcasm and apathy can accomplish just about anything. If it doesn't involve a NDA. Or aliens. Or Apple.

So did Roland/Sonar/Cakewalk buy Camels out to rent people or what ?
